update and a question

Yeah! I'm done with IVs. I did my last dose last night. It's been a long two weeks. Last I heard, I only had a small amount of lung still down, I hope it will fix itself over time. I have started using my vest and laying flat for sleeping and CPT. I'm still a little sore but it's manageable. All in all...I'm a lot better. Thanks to everyone for all the prayers.

Now, for my question. How soon after a pneumothorax is it safe to try and use HS? I know that HS causes hard coughing and the last thing I want is another collapsed lung. I am having terrible wheezing in the lung that collasped and it is bringing my Sats down. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to try to use HS to see if it helps. I doubt if it is infection since I just finished IV's and I was on really strong meds. I think I have mucus build up in my lung due to not being able to do CPT on that side. And if HS isnt a good idea, does anyone have any suggestions that might help?

Based on what I've read, there is no definitive "length of time" to wait. Whether to use hypertonic saline following pneumothorax depends strictly on what your FEV1 looks like. Even normal saline (0.9% solution) has the risk of inducing bronchospasm. On the plus side, normal saline of that concentration is sometimes just enough help bring up secretions.

Check with your doc about it. It it were me personally, I'd start with normal saline and see how well that's tolerated. Also, the info I got from my RT about pneumothorax is that a person is not necessarily susceptible to another collapse. It could have been a one-time thing. It really depends on the overall health of the lungs, which brings us back to how your FEV1 looks.

Blessings for a full recovery and a return to your "normal" schedule soon.
