Well I posted on here Friday night about my trip to the ER and how I was having heart palpitations. I looked through the archives and found some posts at the beginning/middle of May about the same problem and some people's experiences/causes, but I wanted to let you all know what the doc said today.
I went this afternoon for a followup from Friday and we were talking about what happened and possible causes. My doc was saying that in many cases Albuterol can cause similar problems (I know alot of people on here say it makes them jittery), I had never had any problems with Albuterol so it kind of caught me by surprise. He said that Albuterol can cause your heart to race and can also cause your potassium levels to drop (which I will add mine where low when I was went to the ER). He said he was going to set me up to be hooked up to a 24 hr. Halter Monitor so that he could determine if that was the problem. They would be able to tell the severity and frequency of the palpitations that way. If it was because of the albuterol he said he could prescribe a Beta Blocker (I think that is what he said, but am having a hard time remembering). Basically that would counteract the effects of the albuterol, so I wouldn't get the heart racing thing.
He also had bloodwork done to check my thyroid because apparently if your thyroid is not functioning properly you can have an increase in hormones which can cause an increase in heart rate. I don't know anything yet, I just went for my appt today. I go on Monday for the Halter monitor and then I go back to the doc after they have the results a few weeks later.
I just wanted to post this because there were a lot of people on here that had posted on all the threads about experiencing the palpitations. I didn't know if any of you all had gone to the doc about it, but knew that if there was something I can take to stop it from happening I would want to know and thought maybe you guys would be interested to know that there is a prescription that can be given if the albuterol is causing the symptoms (they just have to determine it is the albuterol).
Have a great day,
Lindsey
Oh and update otherwise ... I have gained 3 more pounds from my last visit a week and a half ago -- I am now at 111 lbs. YAY! first time over 110lbs in over a yr.
