Want to move back to ireland.

Hi, i was wondering if anyone can help.... i was born in county kerry but then moved to New York at the age of 14. i am now 29 and have CF and diabetes. Could anyone help me out in regards to how you apply for the long term disability card/medical card back home? I am also was curious to know if the damp weather affects any of ye. I would be moving to Dublin if i move back! its been such a long time since i lived there and i have forgotten how certain things work. i know that Ireland is very modernized now and that tretament there has greatly improved.Please any help or advice would greatly be appreciated. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi,You might be better of going to www.cfireland.ie. I'm from ireland myself but don't have cf a friend of mine does. she has a long term disability book but i couldn't tell you how she got it. i think she get about Euro150 a week(i think) If you go to that site and e mail them i'm sure they will be helpful enough. St. Vincents in sandymount(dublin) is the main cf hospital in ireland and thats where the majority of people go but my friend goes to a different hospital in dublin and get iv's and everything there.They don't have the vest over here though if you where thinking of getting one here so i don't think its the same as in america where they have cf centres(i could be totally wrong saying that its just what i've read of this site). As for the damp weather i don't think its too much of a problem except for when typical ireland decides to open its heavens for a few hours you could end up with a chest infection if you start going out in it but i suppose you could get that in new york to. But i wouldn't say the damp weather causes to much hassel. I have to say that ireland would not be as moderized as america but yes the treatment has improved and moved on alot and you'd get generally the same care over her as america. i hope this help's or i could just be talking a load of crap cos i don't have cf myself. i'm very close to my mate(she's my bestest friend)so thats why i know a bit about it. Hi there,Thanks a million for responding! I actually just emailed the Northern Health Board and they told me that i would be entitled to a Long Term Illness card but that does not cover Dostors visits etc... Do you live in America?

HeyYeah a long term illness card is what she has. That covers all medicine and iv's and stuff like that. Yes it doesn't cover doctors but my mate hardly ever goes to the doctor. if shes sick its straight to the hospital cos in the end thats where the doc is going to send you cos he can't give iv's so it would just be a waste of time and money going to the doc. theres a cf nurse in her hospital and thats who she goes to when she's sick she then sorts her out to be seen by her docs and from there its iv's or whatever else. In the time i've know her i think she's gone to the docs maybe 5 times. its always to the hospital. another option if you feel a chest infection coming on just go to casualty yeah you'll be waiting ages but you'll get sorted. i suppose when you come over after a while you'll suss it all out and know yourself what docs to see and where to go and all that. No i don't live in america i live in the south of dublin. Anything else don't be afraid to ask.

hi there,Thank you so much for responding and being so helpful. Well they told me that all persons with a chronic illness are given the LTD booklet but that it does not cover hospital stays nor GP visists. So they told me that i would have to apply for a Medical card but that its "means" tested. Now i guess you can't have a job cause if you do then you will be denied all this right? If you don't mind me asking how old is your friend and does she work? God its so much stress to get anything starightened out. Here its the same garbage but i am currently working full time and have health insurance through my job. But god forbid if i couldn't work anymore i don't know what i would do. hi,Yes my mate has a ltd book to but she never has to pay for anything when she goes to the hospital the ltd covers that as far as i know or maybe she has health insurance not to sure. As for a medical card she wasn't entitled to one i think cos either A) a medical card doesn't cover a long term illness or B)her parents earned over the amount that entitels u to a medical card. now i'm not sure which one but i'm almost certain its the first one that because she has a long term illness she can't get one.Not totally sure on that one so u'll have to check that one out. She has a job but is only allowed to work a certain number of hours a week to get disabilty allowece which isn't much so if your not that sick and are able for a full time job then you obviously won't get the disability allowence. My mate is 23 and is only working part time and going to college. Yeah i'd say your head is all over the place trying to get everything sort but sure once you have it all done it will be grand.I think most jobs over have health insurance but not totally sure and its no bother helping u out. when are you coming back to ireland.
