weak, shaky, icky feeling

Hey everyone,

About a week ago there was a pretty popular post about people who did not have CFRD expierencing weak, lightheaded, shaky, etc. symptoms when they had not eaten. Ushually when this happens to me i grab a snack or eat as much as i can and it will help me to feel much better.

Lately I have been starting to feel like this and even after eating and drinking I am still feeling like I was before. Its really weird since it is the exact same feeling that used to happen and went away after I got my hands on something to eat. Has anyone else had this problem?

I am eating good snacks like nuts and granola bars and potatoes so I dont think the problem is that I am not eating enough because I try to just eat as much as possible... and i still feel this way =(

Any suggestions?

THanks

Yup I used to feel like that quit a bit...and I didn't know why. Up until 2 months ago when I got my yearly testing done for the CF clinic. I had to do a 8 hour fasting test too. I had to drink this really gross sweet orange liquid and then they tested my blood every so often. It turned out that I have CFRD!! Who knew. I too would get the symptoms that you had/have and I would eat something sweet and then I would feel fine again. It's not that your not eating enough...it's that your not eating right?! If you feel dizzy, etc again have a glass of Juice or something that has natural sugars in it. I would definitly make an appointment to get your blood sugars tested, it takes 2 hours but it's worth it. Good Luck!

Maybe not enough fast acting sugar? Try a soda? Sorry babe, that's the best I have.

You may want to try to not just eat something sugary, but have a protein and carbohydrate with it, such a sandwich. You may need something to keep the sugars up once you get them up, and a carb and protein snack will accomplish that. Eating just something sugary and then nothing else will make you rebound right back to low blood sugar. I would definitely have a glucose tolerance test if i were you. Now the odd thing is.... I have had diabetes for 26 years now and it can be tricky, because sometimes the high blood sugars can mimick the same symptoms of low blood sugar, so you definitely want to get yourself checked and see whats going on.

That is a terrible feeling to have. My legs get shaky and weak, and
my hands tremble. It's embarrassing sometimes,
especially at work when I have to give a presentation in
front of a bunch of people.
Usually, a SODA, a small bag of chips, or a candy bar really
helps out. I don't eat anything "empty" like fruit
or celery, because that only makes me more hungry. I think it's
just that our blood sugar gets low and we feel the impact more than
the usual non-cf person.

You could just be glucose intolerant. You sound like me. I have a little restance to glucose, so my blood sugar goes a bit high, but then it comes back down normally. The problem is, our pancrease keeps on producing insulin even when the spike is over, so it goes low again. You might not have CFRD as of yet, and it could last like this for a long time (it's been like 5 years for me..)

The best thing to do is eat a high protein breakfast. If you are going to have carbs then stay away from the simple sugars. Think whole wheat bread, brown rice etc.

Keep the simple sugars for when you feel yourself getting low. Take that, followed by something with protein and carbs. Also when eating carbs, try to mix it with something else. Say you have some chips....eat some cheese with it..or some peanuts. That way it gets digested slower.

Hope that helps.
