Weird Periods

hiya

Just wondering about this really if it could be CF related. I am 23 and have always had irregular peroids but in the last couple of years they;ve been generally okaish. Anyway i have not had a peroid now since late april and i'm worried. I'm not pregnant (obviously have checked that). I don't have any funny discharge, i feel fine. My health did mess up a bit over may/june, which is how i explained it back then, but i didn't loose a significant amount of weight only a couple of kilos (which is what usually messes it up), i even put on wiehgt since then, and subsequently lost it, but this is only within a coupe of kilos (about 4-5 pounds i think?). So i don't think it's weight as my peroids have survived more varied flucuations. I have been on TOBI continuously for 3 months now but i dont' see how that can mess things up and it's not a listed side effect. Hmmm i'm just not sure. it might be totally un CF related, but even then i have no idea as i display no other symptoms - they've just stopped!

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I am not sure about this, but thought I would bring it up just in case.

A friend of mine in high school was anemic and ended up going to the doc because she had not started her period and she was 17. The doc told her that she would not start her period until she got the proper amount of iron in her body/blood. She started taking a supplement and within a few months started her cycle.

Just thought maybe if you had been having problems with deficiencies or if the docs had mentioned you being anemic that could be an underlying cause. Again I am not sure if there was more to the situation or not, as we were in H.S. and I am sure there are things she didn't mention or we didn't understand at the time.

1. How much do you weigh. If you're chronically underweight, this could play a big role. Add low weight with being sick off and on and your body may have just thrown in the towel.

2. Are you on birth control? Using birth control over a long period of time can cause the lining of the uterus not to build up. Therefore there is nothing to shed - so no period. You still go through your normal cycle, and you will probably get cramps as well. But no lining to shed.

3. Stress can cause missed periods as well. If u were sick just 2 months ago, your body may still be getting over the stress. I think people (myself definitely included) unestimate the effect that stress has on the body. It can supress the immune system, interfere with heart function, and cause the body to alter normal functions such as monthly cycles.

Well it seems like you have covered all the bases. Remember-you're 23 and the body continues to go through changes then. I'm 24, and between 23 and 24 I noticed major changes. A weight of say 120 pounds may not affect your periods when you are 20, but at 23 maybe it would. That's not to say anything for sure, but I think women on general compare themselves to the 'normal' standard of other women. Like, a typical cycle is 28 days-well, that's only for about 60% of women. Most women are different. Remember you are different, so think outside the box.

Did you start any new supplement-herbs, diet change? You mentioned the TOBI-missing periods isn't a listed affect, but maybe for you it is an affect. I'm also thinking nutrition. You say your weight hasn't changed dramatically. But, if your body has changed, like your enzymes, or you've developed a GI issue that you aren't aware of, it could be affecting how many nutrients you are absorbing. Maybe its a nutriton issue. Remember sometimes its not wether or not we have weight issues, or have bad stools-sometimes we just aren't getting enough nutrition out of our diet. I'm an example of that. I have never had weight issues. I've taken 3 enzymes with meals my whole life. But I started getting this bloating, and other GI icky stuff. I had a colonsocopy and some bloodwork and it showed very low vitamin levels, and lots of greasy build up in my colon. Major nutrition deficiency! So I had to adjust my enzymes.

Finally-go to a GYN. If you have and haven't gotten an answer-please get a new one! They have to do tests to rule out serious things first, then go from there. Period issues in CF are usually weight or medication related. I know b/c of your situation you'd think-its probably not related to cf, but sometimes its too much of a coincidence. You never know.
Hope you find an answer, and give us an update!

Hello
Sorry that was my post

Anyway thanks for your suggestions. My weight sits at
100pounds (i think, 45kg anyway) which is a BMI of 18.3 as i'm only
5'1. However this has been my average weight probably for the
last 2-3 years ) MY nutrition is not great but no different
to the last few years, in fact it might be a bit better. My
stomach behaves itself to the level of the last few years. I
think all my vitamin levels are all right as i had blood work done
a few months ago and they'd have flagged it up to me if anything
was amiss i'm sure. I don't take any herbs or anything or
anything new. (except the continual TOBI - i was month on month off
before that). I know i'll be different to the normies out
there but 4 months is a long time to go without (even when my BMI
was 17 in Feb i still had a period!). i'm also not on any
form of birth control and never have been.

That said, i think amy you probably have it on the button with
stress, but to miss 4 of them?! The last few months have been
extremely stressful for me and not just in terms of health, doing a
Phd (wondering if i can/should), getting dumped (thanks for that),
having allergic reactions all over the place to IV's so i couldn't
do them at home! Yes...i think i have been quite a basketcase
and i'm not one for talking about it. Things are settling
down now a bit though so god damn it bleed woman! hehe Sounds
weird, but periods are reassuring, i always take them to mean, i'm
doing alright.

Thanks for your opinions :)
Any significant weight loss? Women need to have 17% body fat minimum to have their periods. See your doc though, it could be lots of things from a hormone imbalance to something serious.

Hi, just to share my experience. I'm 5'1 and 100 lbs and
while that was enough to maintain my period for years(although it
was never on Schedule) it did stop when I was 22 and they were
very sure it was my weight. I frankly don't miss it. So
no biggy to me.
