What keeps you motivated when you are sick?

Hi guys,

I just want to know what keeps you motivated to do exercize when you have a chest infection and aren't feeling too good? I'm not very good at it, when I get sick I stop exercizing and I don't want to do that anymore.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

I know how you feel. Yesterday was 3rd day of lying on the sofa, and my mind was about to explode from boredom. I was ready to jump out of my skin. So I just grabbed the dog and took a walk down to see the horses, around the pond and then back up. I felt like crap when I left, but it was really a boredom thing that got me. Just walking outside, breathing in fresh air can save your mind.

Well - I just started trying to exercise regularly a few weeks ago as we just got a treadmill. I started when I didn't feel well - hoping that it would help me. It did help in some respects because it made me feel good about myself - being that I can feel like crap but still get up and walk a mile or --X-- distance.
I was admitted to the hospital last week and have since been discharged and sent home on IVs. I have been walking everyday since I got home - for several reasons.

1) I could really tell a difference in my level of ability and activity when I wasn't exercising. It was discouraging to me how little stamina I had.
2) Because it makes me feel good as mentioned above - it gives me a little confidence boost.
3) It helps me to burn off the energy that I have - like Christian said ... it is a boredom thing with me alot of the time too.

I think for me personally, I have NEVER been one to exercise on a regular basis. I look at it as better late than never, so I am trying to start now. I think I a sticking with it because I can feel a difference in myself when I walk and it feels good. I am hoping to start building up my stamina and increase my lung function as well.

Also an added bonus it is a bit helpful with my blood sugars - they have been high after breakfast alot lately and I have been trying to walk after breakfast ... so it helps to lower them a little.

Good Luck and I hope you are able to drag yourself to exercise even if you aren't feeling well - even just a little. I know it is hard though somedays you just don't feel you have the energy.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Just as a side note-What have you guys heard as far as exercise when you're sick. I've heard docs/therapists say little to no exercise. I guess I should say, i've heard more of the 'Don't overdo it" speech from docs as far as exercising when I'm sick, than "go to the gym" speech.

What have you heard? Didn't mean to steal your thunder, anon! I guess maybe we're kinda asking a similar thing anyway!

Christian</end quote></div>

My docs tell me to be careful and not to overdo it. They tell me it is beneficial, but again to be careful not to push too hard that I make the situation worse or have serious difficulty breathing if I am already sick and having problems breathing anyway.

im told not to overdo it too. makes sense, having a serious lung infection is really a time for rest. i just take short strolls around the neighbourhood in that situation.
