What was your experience trying to get pregnant?

Hi! I am new to the forums here, but have a few questions. I have been married for 2 years and my husband and I are wanting to start trying to get pregnant starting in January, provided that he tests negative for a CF carrier gene. (Not because I am against babies with CF being born of course, just because my health has been unstable enough that I'm worried enough about being a mom, let alone a mom of a seriously ill child.)

Here are my questions--

How long did it take you to get pregnant?

Were you actively trying to get pregnant?

Did you have a gyn exam to see how thick your cervical mucus was?

Did you have to have any fertility treatments? If so, what?

I had an exam two weeks ago and was told that my cervical mucus is so thick, it's almost like a pregnant woman with a mucus plug. My family doctor seemed pretty concerned about my chances of getting pregnant - obviously though, he's just a family doctor and knows little about CF. I'm just wondering, for those of you who also were told you had very thick cervical mucus, how long did it take you to get pregnant?

Thanks!

Hi Cindy,

It took about 13 years for me to get pregnant. I tried and wanted very much to have a baby since i was 20 years old and now at age 33 I am 33+4 weeks pregnant. I never had any exams or fertility treatments. I think this is some kind of miracle <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi Cindy,

I went straight to IUI. The nurse who did my IUI mentioned how thick the cervical mucus was. I got pregnant on try #2 without fertility meds.

My lung function was 61% when I started to pursue pregnancy. I had it up to 67% by the time of conception. I was with my husband for 9 years on birth control the whole time. I went off birth control and watched my cycle for 6 months and used the knowledge I was learning to not get pregnant. After I had confirmed ovulation and thought I knew when I could get pregnant we turned the tables and started to try. I got pregnant that first month. I was 28 years old. We had done carrier testing for 95% of the mutation incidence rate. When son was born, since I hadn't done extensive testing on dh we did it on son and found a second mutation. I suggest you either testing your dh for over 1000 mutations (the test is called sequencing through Genzyme or Ambry)or your child upon birth to be sure he or she doesn't have cf. It's best for the child as you probably know to have preventative care (ie. before symptoms show up). Good luck!

Babyangel - wow, that is perseverance!

Rubyroselee - thanks! That is good to know... I am thinking we will probably give it 6-12 months before trying IUI, but that is definitely something we're considering.

LouLou - Do you know how thick your cervical mucus was before? I absolutely plan to chart my cycles, etc. (especially since my menstrual periods are very irregular and so I need to figure exactly what my cycle IS), but I am concerned that the thick mucus plug will make it difficult for the sperm to find the egg, as it were!

Oh, and for the record - I do plan to go on guaifanesin about 2 months before I go off birth control, to start (hopefully) thinning out the mucus.

Hi Cindy, My cervical mucus was thick. OBGYN's have always commented on it through the years. In fact sometimes before my annual pap they have to 'clear it out' in order to get a good smear.

On day 21 of my cycle I would pass a rubber cement ball. So much for egg white consistancy, eh? I guess my dh has agressive swimmers or it was a miracle. Well really either way it was a miracle. It couldn't of happened at a better time. Since his birth I have declined, while my pfts are the same, I struggle to stay as well. I attribute this not only to having an child who gets me sick and all that goes with being a mom who gives 200%. But the big thing is I now culture MRSA which has been very difficult on my health. Even though I'm convinced I picked it up in labor and delivery. I'm sure my lungs were especially susceptible to MRSA and it was just a matter of time for me to get it.

Please excuse the horrible sentance structure. I just read my post and am too lazy to fix it!
