As i said in the abstract, viagra was shown to correct the cftr placement in the cell membrane.

Here's an article on this as well...

Sildenafil (Viagra) corrects DeltaF508-CFTR location in nasal epithelial cells from patients with cystic fibrosis.
Dormer RL, Harris CM, Clark Z, Pereira MM, Doull IJ, Norez C, Becq F, McPherson MA.

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Immunology, University of Wales College of Medicine, Heath Park, Cardiff CF14 4XN, UK. dormer@cardiff.ac.uk

BACKGROUND: Most patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) have a DeltaF508 mutation resulting in abnormal retention of mutant gene protein (DeltaF508-CFTR) within the cell. This study was undertaken to investigate DeltaF508-CFTR trafficking in native cells from patients with CF with the aim of discovering pharmacological agents that can move DeltaF508-CFTR to its correct location in the apical cell membrane. METHOD: Nasal epithelial cells were obtained by brushing from individuals with CF. CFTR location was determined using immunofluorescence and confocal imaging in untreated cells and cells treated with sildenafil. The effect of sildenafil treatment on CFTR chloride transport function was measured in CF15 cells using an iodide efflux assay. RESULTS: In most untreated CF cells DeltaF508-CFTR was mislocalised within the cell at a site close to the nucleus. Exposure of cells to sildenafil (2 hours at 37 degrees C) resulted in recruitment of DeltaF508-CFTR to the apical membrane and the appearance of chloride transport activity. Sildenafil also increased DeltaF508-CFTR trafficking in cells from individuals with CF with a single copy DeltaF508 (DeltaF508/4016ins) or with a newly described CF trafficking mutation (R1283M). CONCLUSIONS: The findings provide proof of principle for sildenafil as a DeltaF508-CFTR trafficking drug and give encouragement for future testing of sildenafil and related PDE5 inhibitors in patients with CF.

SO my question is, has anyone actually tried viagra and has anyone seen a difference? Or is anyone will to try it? I'm actually kinda curious lol!

Sean Davis, where are you?

1. I just have a hard time believing that's true. If it was, why isn't every CF patient taking it? Reminds me of those info-mercials on TV. If you could just take a pill and lose weight, why wouldn't everyone be doing it? I'm extremely skeptical.

2. Pfizer (the maker of Viagra) has conducted Cystic Fibrosis trials before. Remember the zithromax clinical trial? Zithro is made by Pfizer as well. Granted the CFF did foot some of the bill. Who knows? Maybe Pfizer will jump on board again...

Um maybe because they just came up with the results, and they haven't had time to see if a long term treatment with viagra is safe and tolerable?

True or not, the research is there. What they do with that is another question

Been there, seen that. Circa 03/2005:

Old, though still interesting.
Please read Bambi's response to it (Seasprite).. I seem to remember her saying that she was a geneticist, or research scientist or something such as.

Thought I would let you know.

Ok, I may be a girl, but I would be willing to try Viagra. For the sake of CF of course. LOL. Ever seen that episode of Sex and The City, where Samantha trys Viagra?

Um so are they doing phase II or phase III trials to test safety/tolerability?

Liz-This is very Sex and the City. lol.

I am very skeptical too. And we already know that Viagra is safe long term to people b/c its been here a while now. So, I don't know why they wouldn't be using it already on us. Of course, it could all be political garbage keeping it from us, you never know.

I appreciate your post however, and to answer your original question-H*ll NO would I ever try it. Sorry. Not a chance. Icky.

2 questions:

1. Why would you try it? What's icky about it?

2. What type of political stuff would be keeping Viagra from CF patients?

I haven't read alot about viagra in CF folks, but have read of its uses in pulmonary hypertension. Actually, it is being used in children with primary pulmonary hypertension (actually know a kiddie on the stuff). I have also heard of it being used in mountain clilmbers who develop issues with pulmonary edema. So....who knows? Hugs, Jenn
