Wondering if there is a solution to CF Clinic and Lab work

Hi there, I have never had any terrible concerns about CF Clinic until last week. My sons clinic is awesome about not having families wait in the lobby before our appointments. They rush us right back to our rooms. My concern is after all they do as far as gowns/face masks/gloves sterilizing things.........why would they send us back to back down to the lab for blood work. I know for a fact that we followed another CF family down and they used the lab room right before us, because the GI doc called my son by the others family name on mistake during our appointment. Then when the family left the lab the women thanked him using the same first/last name the GI had mistakenly called my son. I don't want to be a stickler, but it just seems silly that they take all these extra steps to protect the kids. Then send us down to hang out in the lab together. Should I mention this or just chalk it up as things happen.

Thanks,

Sarah

I'd be concerned with whether or not they were sanitizing the room afterwards. They do the same thing at the local cf clinic we used to go to -- would send everyone down for xrays, labs and pfts. We wondered because DS' cultures only showed pseudo on the dates we had local cf clinic and if maybe there were some cross contamination issues.

As for the calling them by the wrong name, I guess I'd double check that they had the specimens labeled correctly. At any of the clinics we've gone to they ask the child's name and DOB, at the hospital they match the id bracelet with the info on their file.

The large clinic I go to makes all patients wear a mask at all times except in their personal room. I like that policy. I have never had bloodwork done there though. I don't have any problem asking questions about whether something has been sanitized or not. I don't tend to use the scale or the pulse ox at my clinic. I either keep my shoes on or they don't get a weight and I bring my own pulse ox. Instead of trying to control the environment around me I take my own precautions. I bring plenty of hand sanitizer. I don't touch anything unless I have to. I bring my own pen and I touch elevator buttons with that and sign things with my own pen. I touch knobs with a cloth and I double mask. I also put my clothes in the laundry right away when I get home.

It is just too hard to control what others do so I take the control. Maybe you could bring your own sanitation wipes as well as a mask for your child. I think masks should be policy at all CF clinics. I know this might sound extreme; but, no one really notices how cautious you are being and anyone who knows anything about CF would commend you for taking those extra steps. I didn't share this to make anyone feel paranoid if you don't happen to go to the extremes that I do. I do this by my own choosing and it makes me fee like I have some control over the clinic day and I find the extra steps very easy to do.
