Zosyn and bleeding

When i asked my Dr. to put me on iv's i requested something different that the same ol' Merrem and Tobramycin. She gave me Zosyn and Merrem. I started to feel much better pretty quickly after starting the iv's but i started having streaks after a few days of starting the meds. I figured it may have something to do with my menstrual cycle because hemoptysis seems to coincide with that. Well last Thursday i coughed up about a tablespoon of blood. Then on Sat. same thing. Last night i coughed up about 2 tablespoons of blood and i started to think back to what i saw on the internet about Zosyn. It said something about talking to your Dr. before starting it if you have bleeding probs, or are on blood thinners.
Makes me wonder if the Zosyn could be the culprit of this round of bleeding. I have no idea since i am no stranger to hemoptysis, but it usually does not happen when i am on iv's......... and feeling pretty well. I havent had much trouble in the past few months with hemoptyiss and believe me i REALLY enjoyed the break, but it seems kind of odd that it would start at such an unlikely time ( while on iv's and doing well)
any ideas?

Diane,

Well first of all, I would definitely tell your doc. I am sure you know that. I can share with you what happened with me. I had the same thing happen 2 weeks after being on it, I coughed up about 2 tbsp. with a "blob of mucous". Some very slight streaking after that. I immediately told my doc and he said I probably coughed up something deep. My PFT's went up a few days after that. That was my experience. My bleeding did not continue though.

Diane,
I just did a little bit of research. I think a lot of IV abx have that precaution. From my 5 minute search, it is likely that your Vit. K levels may be depleted by the abx and thus the bleeding. You may need to up your vit. K intake. I don't know if you can point to Zosyn as the culprit. It might have happened with another IV med as well. Have you had bloodwork for your Vit. K lately? Ask your doc about it. Hope this helps.

Thanks Karen,
I called my Dr. this morning before i made this post and she said it isnt likely that the medicine itself caused the bleeding, but then again theres no guarantee it didnt. I told her i stopped taking it last night. I did up my vit.K on Thursday after the first bleed. Normally i take 10 mg. at night but i started taking 5 mg. in the morning along with the 10mg. at night to keep a steadier level of vit. K in my blood stream. I could see that shortly after i was coughing it up last night into a cup, it was clotting pretty quickly in the cup, so i know the extra K is helping, but if only we had a remedy to prevent hemoptysis instead of deal with it as it happens.
