In my experience up until I was 30 (at 78-80%), was a very small decline each year, maybe the 4% or less some years. Age 30 was when the numbers started having a mind of their own and dropped drastically. Mine was most likely due to a bug.

I'm quite the cougher too and yes, it completely annoys me at times.
Pretty much if I don't do my breathing right before bed I'll be coughing all night and wake up exhausted. During the day I cough but it's usually gone for a few hours after treatment then comes back before I do the next one...
