A poem I wrote (transplant, B. cepacia related)

This is something I wrote months ago, when I met a girl--Jessica--who made me reconsider my then-current decision not to pursue a lung transplant. Faced with the daunting prospect of moving states away, while being extensively sick, to a center that would still be willing to perform a transplant...

Jokes Loved Ones Make About CF

Ah yes, domestic violence jokes! I and Jessica make them all the time. It was even funnier when Zosyn did a number on my platelet count (I presume) and made me get bruised all over. I still try to make her feel guilty about "kicking me so much" ;-) Be careful making those around babies, though...

    Recipes for CF Cookbook

I'd buy a CF cookbook. Please make sure it lists calorie values, though! A complete "Nutrition facts" box next to each recipe, like on food labels, would be just dandy, if you could manage that. I hate counting those myself from the recipe. Be sure to include this <a target=new...

    alternative therapies

Be VERY careful with "alternative" medicine. Remember that its practitioners have at LEAST as much of an incentive to rip you off as doctors or drug companies, and, UNLIKE those, have effectively zero standards or accountability. They can claim any bullshit they want and get away with it...

How much is your life worth?

<blockquote>Quote<br><hr><i>Originally posted by: <b>perky79</b></i><br>some of the problems with socialized medicine are the lines for treatments (especially for cancer patients)...<hr></blockquote> Nonsense. This "problem" has not been established to exist in the first place, and if it does...

How much is your life worth?

<blockquote>Quote<br><hr><i>Originally posted by: <b>Anonymous</b></i><br>The majority of people in the US don't see how socialized medicine would benefit the masses (because it doesn't benefit the masses - only the people that need it - like me and you!).<hr></blockquote> That's a truly...

    Types of Antibiotics

As far as I know, there are only generic guidelines for treating stuff with antibiotics (i.e., when a certain class is known not to affect a certain germ). Anything above that, you need to isolate the germ and hit it with something in-vitro, to see whether it dies off. But for a general rundown...

How much is your life worth?

<blockquote>Quote<br><hr><i>Originally posted by: <b>Anonymous</b></i><br><blockquote>Quote <hr>Government should pay for healthcare and subsidize medicine development. <hr></blockquote> I imagine social medicine is not desired by the masses in this country.<hr></blockquote> You'd be surprised...

    Message to God

<blockquote>Quote <hr><i>Originally posted by: <b>Anonymous</b></i> To the original poster Read the book of Job in the Bible.</blockquote> Or don't, since, perhaps more than any other book in the Bible, it sets God up as an immature, capricious jerk who lets Satan destroy Job's life to settle...

How much is your life worth?

Turning free-marketer logic on its head, if you don't like taxes or socialized/subsidized healthcare or whatnot, you can always move to a country that doesn't have them. The same exact argument that calls for an effective, funded military that defends all, should also justify healthcare. Why...

    Love and CF

Don't miss out on love, if you can at all help it. If there's anything that can make everything you've ever gone through unabashedly, undeniably worth it, it's being close to another person in every way imaginable, sharing their hopes and dreams, wanting to make them the happiest they've ever...

Has anyone heard or tried this?

In the States, try <a href="<a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.needymeds.com/">NeedyMeds</a>,">http://www.needymeds.com/">NeedyMeds</a>,</a> which gives a list of ways to obtain free drugs without health coverage if you don't have the money. Just recently, I used a...

    Message to God

It's perfectly alright to question God's existence, though. (It's amazing how some things about the world just plain make more sense if you <i>don't</i> assume it was made to order by a perfect, omnipotent superbeing.) ;-)

    How close are they really?

No one's trying to take away anyone's hope, Anonymous. But at the same time, most of us wouldn't want to nurture false hopes, because--among other things--they're a real letdown when exposed as nonsense. Also, it's important to stay realistic with this illness. Cloned lung transplants, or...

    Fever 103

For the record, I'm not Anonymous, have B. cepacia, and yes, experience fevers on IV drugs a week or two into the treatment that never go away until I stop using them. Mine, however, are more in the 99.x range, and rarely break a 100 (still leaving me feeling like crap, though). They drive me...

    How close are they really?

Would a "cure" that corrects the basic CF gene defect do a thing to remove existing lung scarring or the other long-term effects of this illness? If not, at most, it would help kids who didn't have much of it yet live healthy from then on; and us critically ill folk would still be screwed...

    Wheezing

Excellent advice, Luke. One might also add that having access to as many forms of airway clearance as possible will add variety and lessen the boredom of it, letting you stick to a consistent regimen better. For example, sometimes I'm just made uncomfortable with the vest, but okay with manual...

    Cf and religion

Thanks, Anonymous. One of the reasons I still participate on these types of threads is that I know people like you, who are actually capable of discussing things reasonably or rationally disagreeing, read them too. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

    living in denial

<blockquote>Quote<br><hr><i>Originally posted by: <b>Anonymous</b></i><br>Winace Yes sometimes life is rough and there will always be opstacles to overcome but telling someone that life is not worth living when they are already feeling this way is just not right.<hr></blockquote> I didn't. I...

Off Topic - Freedom of "Thought"

Actually, some things really do seem to have no redeeming value at all. The most that can be said about them is that, with some Herculean effort, they need not be as altogether horrendous as they would otherwise. But that's hardly a silver lining... I know how you feel, Amy. Being blunt is so...
