I too have often wondered about this but shied away from the idea because I was thinking they are probably a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

Yup - we dealt with this quite a while ago --my daughter switched to Proventil and liked it better (except for the price) ... not nearly as cheap as generic albuteral.
