Cf'ers have the ufnorutnate ability to 'host' bacteria in our lungs very well. We have alot more mucous than most and so the bacteria can get in there and 'live' thus doing alot of damage in the process.

coughing and getting the mucous OUT of the lungs is the key to preventing damage with CF lungs. As for as once you cough it out, you can swallow or spit. I have heard swallowing can upset the belly and intestines for some but I dont know of any other ill effects.

It really is not a 'hold off on IV's as long as possible' to keep her healthy scenario. Yes some individuals might not go on IV's but have you ever looked at their PFT's?
Mine were 105% at my last appointment this does not mean that I dont need treatments yet, I have IV's 1-2x a year...
