10% Hypertonic Saline

anonymous

New member
I've been getting 7% HS through Foundation Care but was wondering if there was a cheap way to get the 10%. My doctor just let me know a new recipe for hypertonic saline....5 ml of 10% hypertonic saline with my albuterol vial(2.5ml) to get a 7% Saline solution.

I have heard that 10% is commercially available, but can't find it. I'm hoping it would be cheaper than buying the saline kits or having the 7% made up like I currently do.

Any suggestions....thank you

I have never heard of a doctor reccomending people to mix saline and albuterol. I would think that using straight saline would be much better, but that is my opinion.
I get 10% saline and 3% saline and mix them to reach 7%, the reccomended dose. I get them from Cf Pharmacy. I think it costs about $20 for a 1-2 month supply.

I also get my 10% saline from the CF pharmacy. I am not sure exaclty what the cost is b/c it is all done thru my ins and I pay only the copay. I mix mine with .9%. I was told that there are only certain places that sell the 10% it is not sold everywhere. Some hospital pharmacies have it like mine at Vandy does but only due to the fact that they are a larger pharmacy. Your best bet is the CF pharmacy I believe.

Original Poster here....
I think mixing the saliine and albuterol is something that he learned at the CF conference he just came back from. Basically, it's the same as diluting the 10% saline with a lesser % saline to achieve the 7%....you just use albuterol instead.

My insurance doesn't cover the saline and the $36 per month that I currently pay isn't that bad....I just all adds up. I get tired of paying close to $200 per month, on a healthy month, so I figure any cost savings I can find I will take. (Okay, that was my little rant....at least I'm not paying thousands a month, the actual cost of the meds)

Any more suggestings out there?

I was also getting the HS mixed by the pharmicists to either 5% or 7%. This cost was high, I think around $150 to $200 dollars per month. It's been a while so I forgot.

Then, one day the pharmacists and I started sharing ideas to make this process/prescription easier and cheaper. He stated people are having a hard time affording the mixed solution as the cost rises just for the process of mixing and keeping sterile.

For me, we came up with this: I buy the 10% solution; this is cheaper because it's already made sterile in that solution content and no mixing is needed by the pharmacist. Then I dilute it with either broncho saline and/or albuterol.
(2 ml of 10% HS)+(1 ml of either broncho saline or albuterol) or for larger treatment I use (4 ml of 10% HS + 1 ml of broncho saline + 1 ml of albuterol). These = 7% solution. The premade 10% vials have 15ML of HS in each one. My pharmicist said to use what you need out of one 15ML vial for a day (24 hours) then throw the rest and open a new one for the next day. There is some waste, but the cost is much cheaper. (just salt water.) I get 30 vials (month supply) for $24.77, broncho saline is $7.04.

He did tell me adding other things besides the broncho saline to the HS will dilute the solution as well.

He said if this concept works for me, maybe others could do this as well and be more affordable. You may have to check around at different pharmacy's to see if they carry this.

Hope this helps.
