2- or 3-week course of (IV) antibiotics

Mostly my suggestions were based on how my doc manages my care. Perhaps I do longer IV therapy than others because that's the only option for me, since I don't tolerate oral abx and I'm allergic to the basic most powerful ones.

Pan resistance is more likely to happen when you're taking a big-gun common abx like Cipro. The problem is also when you use the same abx to treat different bugs. For example, if you cultured something different every time but were always given 1 type of antibiotic, then yes you may eventually find that all of those bugs become resistant. In my case, I culture the same thing every time, so we have really zeroed in on which combination of IVs will knock them out.

My FEV1 is usually the indicator of whether I need abx in the first place. My FEV1 usually comes up shortly into a course on IVs. Your situation may be quite different. I was just basing it all on my particular POV. As always, adjust accordingly <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

i appreciate it. it's just weird to me that all of our treatments are so different. it makes me go on a mental hunt of wondering which doctors are "more correct." (i know, i know, all relative.) or, more simply, it makes me want to understand the reasons some things are done differently.

Laura, i can't really help you cause i've really always had my iv's for a standard 3 week course.

BTW like you said i was not supposed to have them longer either. I was always on Tobra and that was really a no go for going longer for my docs. With the fear of resistance i guess (i had very few ab's still working for me, last it was only Tobra) and my doctor always said that if i had not improved after 3 weeks it didn't matter if i would have another week. I have the last years i've had iv's i would sometimes not get better during but i would start to feel better after, usually about a week i think.
Januari 2006 when i was on a course it really didn't do anything and i had to stop after 3 weeks and see how i was the weeks after. If i really had to i could begin again after about 3 weeks. And i did, after 4 i think. I did have to take these weeks in between. Guess this is different too. As most of the time (without multi resistent Pseudo) you can start another ab right away when the first doesn't work).

Remember still needing a nap could be a side effect from the ab's too.

Anyway, this has gotten longer then i thought hehe. Just wanted to say i'm thinking of you and hope you will improve even more!

Laura-My docs believe that stopping antibiotics prematurely before they have done their job is a big no no that leads to resistance. If I am not back up to baseline (according to PFT's and feelings and level of sputum I am getting up) then I have to do a 3rd week. If it was a bad bout for you I would definately think going for a 3rd week is better safe than sorry. Otherwise, you might end up with a residual lingering infection that catches up with you again in a month or so. This is just my opinion based on my case and my docs. So they dont see you every week when on antibiotics??
