8 WEEKS and 3 days till I graduate............

I am so excited.. I think it may really happen.. I think I am going to graduate!!!!!!! I can't believe it.. Just 8 weeks and 3 days to go.... I can't even tell you how exciting it is .. and yet scary because I still have 8 weeks left.

Things are going good as far as my job is going. I didn't realize how much CF was really going to come into play when it came to me getting a job. EVERYONE HAS AN OPPINION on where I should work... My poor boss is being harrassed by so many ppl tellhing her not to hire me because they want to "force" me into a clean area..

I spend half my day explaning that my doctors with out a doubt would rather have me work in an ER then on a medical floor period. BUt it is so sad for me because my boss is needed me to be able to commit to things that I know I can't/ SHe loves me so much, she really does and she wants what is best for me..

I feel like this is the first time CF is really hitting me in the head.. because I can't be deemed reliable since I never know when I am going to be out sick.. I swear I am so tempted to move away and the next place I go, not tell anyone I have CF just so I can start over fresh.

My boss told me she will not let CF be a reason to stand in the way of me being hired. but it saddens me to know that I am such a pain in the neck to everyone.

Remember my boss is very much a supportor of mine and she really does love me, but she can't change some things about me having CF and the days I miss.

THanks for letting me share...

Congratulations Jennifer! I know you are happy.

I remember when my husband, Chad, got down to those last few weeks....I was marking down the days and I wont even taking the classes. Its a good feeling to see the end.

Just my opinion I dont think the ER would be a good place to work with CF. Chad works there and thats where most Flu/colds/viruses go to before they go up to a medical floor. At least on the medical floor u usually know what the patient is in there for and can be prepare with mask if need be. In the ER you find out after the fact. Just wanted to put that in there. But honestly, you should work where ever you are most comfortable and makes you happiest.

Now you see what I mean when I say everyone has an oppinon on where I should work. HAAAAAAAAAAA

That is what one would think, however, in reality, very very few people go to the ER for a cold, flu or virus, those are all things that are usually treated on an out patient basis. If someone happends to come to the emergency room for any of those things they go to a different area of the emergency room called Fast Track. I don't work there normally. and every patient is triaged by the triage nurse and I am fully aware of what their symptoms are before I go into the room. If I need to I wear a mask as well. I have kids throw up on or around me almost weekely, I have never caught a stomache virus from them in all the years I am there.

ON THE REGUALR MEDICAL SURG FLOORS THEIR IS SOMETHING CALLED NOSOCICOMIAL INFECTIONS, also know as hospital aquired infections, those are the real dangerous ones. that is where ppl get HAP hospital aquired pneumonia, that is where vented patients are, and they get pseduo and mrsa, and VRE.

I have never in the six years I have worked their every had a patient in the ER with any of those things. PPL are misinformed about the ER, the majority of patients that go there are for chest pain, gerd, kidney stones, appendixes, miscarragies, anxiety, heart attacks, strokes, asthma, etc.Head aches and stiches and broken bones NONE Of these are contagious, also congestive heart failure is a big one to, that is not contagious either.

SINCE THE HEAD OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE AT MY HOSPITAL THINKS IT IS THE BEST PLACE FOR ME TO WORK, AND THAT IS WHAT I WANT THAT IS WHAT I AM GOING TO DO, AS LONG AS I AM OFFERED THE JOB.

If anyone else doens't think I should work there, please don't tell me, I wasn't asking for ppls veiws on where I should work as much as the fact that I am sad that CF is standing in the way of me being a good reliable employee.

Thanks, and I appreciate you thinking I should do what makes me happiest..

Jennifer,
I'm sorry. I didnt mean to offend you. I was just telling what goes on in my local hospital. I was unaware of anything called "Fast Track". Our ER doesnt have a "fast track". It's just an ER, thats it. Any and everything goes in there. There is the nurses station, a place to take vital signs then rooms with the beds. Thats all. After work, when my husband (first a CNA, now an RN, who has been working in the ER going on 7yrs now) gets home, he goes straight to take a shower before seeing me because of what he is exposed to (colds/flu/rsv/viruses, which are contagious, but he is also sees and treats ppl with the other things u listed (chest pain, chf, cva, asthma, broken bones, etc.) which as u said are not contagious) as a safetly measure for me so I'm not exposed to anything extra. I was just telling that side of it, not meaning to telling you where to work and sorry if it seemed that way. Congradulations on graduation.

Danyell, one of our two local ERs is the same as yours - any and everything goes through there. The other ER has two sections - the Level II trauma area where those with traumatic injuries go, and the regular ER where everything else goes. But, that's been a recent change - last 2 years. From my experience in other cities, that's how the small to medium sized towns operate. Only large cities, metropolitan areas, or just really advanced areas seperate the two. But, that's just my experience. I agree that this type of ER wouldn't be a good place for a cfer to go (my hubby went through there with Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever when he was in really bad shape, also with pancreatitis, I've taken my kids there with croup, asthma flares, and broken bones, and there are always lots of people there with the flu, ear infections, garden variety colds and fevers, stomach bugs, etc.)

Congratulations Jennifer!!!!!! Your ER sounds like a fun (and very busy!) place to work!!

Oh, wanted to add that in our city a lot of parents bring sick children to the ER (mostly medicaid parents but others too.) It actually makes no sense to me since if you're just coming there for non-emergency illnesses like the flu (although at times it can be life threatening, usually it's not), anyway, normally you'd wait for hours. If you see your dr or even go to the urgent care centers, you get in much quicker. Doesn't make sense to me but there are a TON of people who use the ER as their primary care for their children. I think I must live in a very uneducated place

We have the same problem in our local ER. I use to work at our local hospital. For us a lot what that they DIDNT have insurance & whether it be an emergency or not, the ER couldnt deny them care. So they got what they needed & didnt need to worry about payment at the time or for some didnt care about payment at all. I also think for some its just convenience. I live in a rural area & the bus runs to the hospital versus the private doctors offices. I personally would rather have our regular doctors care for my husband, daughter or I if at all possible, but that is just us.

Their are a lot of parents who being their kid to the ER because they don't have health insurance. usually they are just wanting a check up for their kid, and you know what I say??????????????

WELCOME, THANKS FOR CARING ENOUGH TO BRING YOUR KID IN and get them checked out.. I will neve, ever, ever, be upset that a parent of another person comes to the ER because even though they don't have an emergency they need care..

People should have access to medical care period. The govermenet has many reimbursment programs called Charity Care for ppl who don't have insurance. I was someone a long time ago that was in need of good medical care, but had no insurance.. I was treated like I was gargabe and a low life.

People do the best they can with thier kids and themselves. IN any place I work, I will go out of my way for someone who doesn't have insurance. I have even with my own money bought them formula and baby medicine that they needed. It is about caring, and treating other humans with the same dignity that you would want to be treated or that your family member would be treated.

I am not going to comment on the ER germs ANYMORE. I HAVE WORKED THERE FOR SIX YEARS AND NOT ONCE EVER HAVE I CAUGHT ANYTHING FOR ANYONE..NOW SUDDENLY CAUSE MY NAME CHANGES TO RN.. I WILL GET SICK... PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE.... Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and I am an adult capable of my own decisions... I again wasn't asking for your thoughts on it.. MOre that I was nervous about being hired.AND THAT I WAS EXCITED THAT I AM ALMOST DONE WITH SCHOOL. I am not offended..just REAL TIRED OF EXPLAINING.. Thanks for the Congrats.

AMY YOUR POST MADE ME CRY.. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Love,
Jennifer

Oh Congratulations!!!!!!!!

You must be so very very excited about being so close to the finish line. = )

There are always going to be people with opinions about your choice. To be honest, I think you are making a wonderful choice. Only very special people can succeed in nursing. It must be one of the toughest jobs out there (hard work, long hours, mentally challenging, emotionally draining, etc). But that is the kind of stuff that often makes a job worth working. You are making a difference in people's lives every single day that you work. What a gift.

Germs? You know what precautions to take. Heck, look at all the peopel on this site with cepacia & other germs who are NOT nurses. Just backing you up by saying that germs are everywhere. If anything, you will be more careful while in the hospital so less likely to catch anything.

Do what you heart tells you to do. You will never regret it.

Jennifer,
I'm sorry, I am the anon poster whom I think you took offense to. Again, I'm honestly sorry, I in no way meant to offend you. My mention of the ERs was actually an aside to Danyell just to tell her that yes, our ER is the same as hers and not like yours. Yours sounds much more efficient and effective. It was really an aside and not meant as a post to you. And, you're right, the comment about "uneducated" people was in poor taste. I'll admit that I am touchy when it comes to this subject. Touchy because we spend a huge % of our income on medical care, go out of our way to ensure that our children get appropriate care, etc, only to be criticized by some of our family for spending too much on drs and not enough on new cars, dance lessons, etc. On the flip side, there are some people (relatives of mine actually) who do not think children need drs. Instead, they use ERs instead of primary care drs. No big deal to them because medicaid pays or the hospital writes it off. It is a big deal to me because first, the kids are not getting the medical care they need. I believe even healthy children need a primary care physician. Last reason it bothers me is that as a taxpayer, I help pay those medical bills to the ER when a PCP would have been a more appropriate place for the child to be seen (in the case of my family members and a few other people.) My frustration with THIS situation led me to generalize to ALL children in the ER for the flu/colds/viruses. That was not fair. I apologize for that.

As far as where you work, that is most definitely your choice. Obviously, the people that love and worry about you may prefer you choose differently (as a mother, I can relate to that.) However, it is still YOUR choice. I believe nursing is a calling and that it takes a special person to do it well. I commend you for not letting anything stop you from your calling. Again, I am very sorry for offending you, it was not my intention.

Congratulations!!!

Hi Dawn,

Thanks so much for the apology. It really is hard to tell someones tone via the computer.. I am and was not offended at all. I am very touchy though and that is probably what came across...about where I am going to work.. I am going through a lot emotionally right now, and feel like I am always fighting the world to prove myself and what I can do. CF for the first time ever in my life, is affecting my emotions and I am very bitter about it. Very disturbing..

I am upset by a lot of things lately, I have some more endocrine problems, Pituatary hormone regulator in my brain is not working right..so the pituatary hormones are off and has caused me to not feel like myself, on top of, I just want ppl to be happy for me, and to stop treating me like I am different.. UGGG I would do anything to make this all go away...

I wish someone can jump inside my head for a little while to understand what I feel, I can't even get it out and words, and am to overwhelmed to even try to talk about it.and I am so darn good about stuffing things and putting on my darn happy face for everyone....but anyway, this is way off topic.

I know it is hard and frustrating to see people milk the system or what appears to milk the system.. I understand a lot of ppl get frustrated with that and get frustrated with their tax dollars going there.. I just am not one of them... I love ppl to much and want what is best for them.. I don't care if my tax dollars go to that.. I want ppl, especially kids to get the best medical care possible...

I went for years being misdiagnoised, undertreated, treated with the wrong meds, labeled, and a whole bunch of other things and I as long as I am a nurse am going to do my best to see that that never happends to any of my patients.

I know you were just giving your beliefs and input..

Thanks again..
