Hi Susan --

This happened to me in high school... it's common in CF... many newborns are diagnosed with CF because they are born with meconium ileus (blocked intestines). Ever since that first episode, every once in a while I realize that I haven't gone to the bathroom in a while. Now I keep miralax (which has recently changed from being prescription to over the counter) on hand in my home so if I'm ever nervous about it, I can take some. It's just a gentle powder stool softener you can mix in a drink. I'd recommend this since it's much better to nip in the bud early that wait until it becomes an issue!!

Hi Susan,

I experienced a bowel obstruction about 4 years ago. After about 2 days with severe abdominal pain, I was admitted to the hospital by my primary care physician. I was never seen by my cf doctor because she practiced at a different hospital. After many pain meds and 5 days of hospital stay, I went home and was fine... until 7 months later. The pain came back and was just as bad as the first time. After some tests, I was told that I needed surgery... The problem that I had 7 months prior flared up again, and this time surgery was needed to correct it.

I think you should get in touch with your CF doctor(S) about this. They know that anything gastrointestinal with a CF patient should not be taken lightly. THere's obviously something wrong and they need to find what it is. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you all for your replies. We are headed to Birmingham to be admitted. She mentioned Cdiff, an obstruction or something to do with the antibiotics he was just on. Keep us in your prayers. Susan
