98,000 deaths a year......

Did you know that approx. 98,000 people in the country die every year due to medical mistakes???????? It is right up there with the top killers, along with cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Wow. I didn't know it was that bad until I read an article yesterday in this months Good Housekeeping magazine. The article is written by a mom who lost her 18 month old due to medical errors. Mainly miscommunication. Sometimes, while in the hospital, I have caught myself saying to my very attentive husband, "They are medical professionals, honey, they know what they are doing." Well, yeah, probably. BUT mistakes happen. We never take our eyes off of what Zoe's nurses and docs do while she is in. Of course, we can't see what goes on in surgeries. We actually have a 'reputation' on the cf floor....as the parents who are "very meticulous about their daughter's care". Oh well.
Anyways, for your info....her site is josieking.org

Well thanks Jada, lol, just one more thing to worry about

But seriously, I'm always concerned about medical interventions, such as PICC etc., I'm sure that most of the people here are. So many things can go wrong...it's scary.

I dont know if it was on here that someone posted 'how does it feel being one of the 1% that everything happens to'...we dont want to part of that 1%...often we are though Anyhow, I'm with you, you have to be there watching all the time...it's a shame we cant have more faith in our mediacl professionals, but they only people after all, and they're often very over worked too.

That number is staggering, but ultimately doesn't surprise me. Yes, our doctors/nurses are supposed to be highly educated individuals - but they still make mistakes. People elevate medical professionals to a status far too great than they deserve. There are exceptional doctors/nurses, but I question each one we've encountered...we're bound to get a "reputation" with Ellie as well!

I have to say as a Registred Nurse, I couldn't agree more.. Patients need to know what is going on for their own saftey.. I swear it is the truth.. Mistakes happen way more often then the patient ever knows.

For me, when I was in NJ at my other hospital.. I constantly caught them making medication errors with me. I was once given lasix because it is a standard order for ppl admitted with CHF and by mistake they admitted me for that instead of CF..

I can't tell you how many mistakes I have caught staff making on me in some hospitals.. IN SC I have not come across it to much where I currently go.

I remember when I started at the hosptial I used to work at, in my orientation they told us how many mistakes are reported each year.. I have also seem mistakes covered up as well. Never in the department where I have worked but I have heard of staff being afraid to be upfront about mistakes because they feared being fired..

Usually the policy is if you fess up your job is spared which makes a more likely environment to be honest. I personally have always been honest, though to my knowledge I only make a mistake once with medication and that was while I was in nursing school and I cried to my professor and we fixed it.

I honestly would never leave a family member alone in the hospital out of fear.
