I have been asked to do a presentation for my company on managing from a patients perspective. I pretty much know how I want this to go but I wanted to get some suggestions, compliments and complaints with regards to your current Durable Medical Equipment provider. This presentation will be in front of 150 of my collegues. This is also will be my CF outing for the enitre company so I need this to go well. If you have anything to add please let me know.

Complaint: trying in vain to get a local source for nebs and compressors, we went through a PARI-suggested DME company. They refused to get the specific things our doc prescribed saying they didn't carry them (PARI LC Plus nebs and a PARI Pro Neb Ultra II). Argued with me that a neb was a neb and I didn't know what I was talking about. PARI told us later that the company COULD get them, they just chose not to.

Compliment: A specialized CF pharmacy and DME provider in Tulsa, Oklahoma that does easily handle any and every thing. They are great, but it all has to be shipped and as I said I was just trying for a local source.

I think my bad experience with the local company speaks to the specialty aspect of CF treatments. We're not just nebbing Albuterol......... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Don't really have a local provider. DS was diagnosed shortly after he was born and we got a nebulizer and a neb cup from the hospital (apria) before we left. I contacted the DME provider affiliated with out clinic when we got home and pretty much got a response simlar to ktsmom "we don't carry that brand (pari)", should you need any equipment, etc. you'll have to have your doctor call in a prescription, ditto if any work needs to be done on the machine.

I ordered a spare devillbiss pulmoaid online for less than $100 and when something went wrong with it, I did take it to the local DME provider and was told they don't carry that brand, they could rent us a spare and they'd have to send it in. They sent it in, was still under warranty and I got a replacement three weeks later (could've done that myself).

So locally, we're kinda left in the lurch. Nobody's really ever been able to tell us where we should go to get medical equipment, etc. I get some spare neb cups at the local cf clinic from the rt department when DS goes in for sputum cultures, otherwise, I order online. Ditto with compressors. Our first Pari that we got from the hospital -- insurance was billed over $350 for a machine that we can find online for less than $50.

I went to an Apria office in person this past summer. I had a Rx written by my doctor for a specific type of compressor. Apria provided me with a different type of compressor, not the one the prescription was written for. I argued, but could not prove what the Rx was written for because I didn't make a copy. The guy would not budge, and I felt his customer service skills were lacking. It was a good lesson learned on my part... make copies of any Rx's you get from your doctor! Good luck with your presentation.
