A1C for CFRDers

Hi,

What is your A1C? I'm curious cause I just got mine back and its 5.3. Not sure if that's "normal" for CFRD? What is the normal ranged for non-diabetics?

Also, I've been told in the past that A1C actually has no relevance whatsoever for CFRD and its not a necessary thing to check. Instead, we're supposed to monitor our glucose levels and oral glucose tolerance test. So, what have ya'll heard?

Thanks,

Just putting it at the top, as I know there are several with CFRD here. Thanks.

I haven't gotten mine checked in a while for it really has no revelance to cfrd from what I understand. But when I was first diagnosed mine was 6.9 or somewhere in that range.

A1C is checked to monitor how well you control your blood clucose and keep it in normal range. The more often your glucose levels are over 120 in a three month period, the higher your A1C will be. This has a long term significance on the occurance of late stage diabetes problems. Your doctor is wrong about it not making much difference unless he is not an optomist.

My doctor didn't say it didn't make much difference... she was mostly saying that it is not a good test for CFRDers cause there is a lot more going on that can only be measured with OGTTests yearly. At my prior CF center, they never checked A1C cause they said the same thing.... it is not indicative of CFRD for some reason or other, and the numbers really aren't a true picture like they would be for Type II.

sonia,

5.3 is excellent. i've never really heard of anyone being that low without an insulin pump. you must be doing a good job keeping control! my A1C usually hovers around 7 or so...it is probably lower now that i am on the lantis. that was before i was doing the lantis regularly. i am about 6 months overdue for my diabetes appointment. i am procrastenating...my doctor is kinda weird anyway.

Laura,

I don't know. I skip insulin a lot, so I don't think I have it too much under control. Maybe it was just a "good" day. Plus, I was drinking a caramel machiatto at the time they took the A1C (no kidding!).... so, maybe that did something to skew it?
