As soon as I think thinks are going to be okay health wise at home sh** hits the fan.

I took my oldest daughter, Lauren (no CF), to the doctors today because she has had a cough for 2 weeks and it was getting REALLY bad.

SHE HAS WALKING PNUEMONIA! The doc said since she is healthy and in such good shape antibiotics should take care of it and he sent her home.

The problem is.......HE SAID IT IS VERY CONTAGIOUS!!

I hope Courtney does not get this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is time to pull out the Lysol cans!!

Do you have close family in town? If so, I would seriously consider sending your daughter to stay with them while the other is sick. That is definately something you don't want a CFer to get, ever.

Its ALWAYS something. This is a good time for a mini-vacation for Courtney and spray, spray spray!!! Lysol is my best friend, next to my glass of wine of course.

Hope everyone gets/stays healthy Seana!

I could never stand lysol spray, it irritated me so much it was worse to use it than to not.

Depends on how your daughter feels about it though.

I know Febreeze makes an antibacterial spray that's supposed to be pretty good, and like Karen mentioned the clorox spray.

Target had a spray called PS2 or something like that and wipes that killed just about any bug known to man. Or Walmart has something called Sani-wipes that are similar to the wipes they have at the clinics.

Around Christmas one of my husband's aunts had pneumonia and we contacted our son's doctor about it. We were told that as long as he didn't get coughed on and as long as the aunt was on antibiotics for at least 24 hours, we should be okay. The aunt had been on antibiotics for almost a week and by the time the Xmas eve came around she wasn't coughing. She still kept her distance just in case.

Make sure your eldest washes her hands constantly. Especially after coughing. Can you quarantine her to her room or to a tv room and make it off limits to courtney or get her a mask, so if she is wandering around the house, she won't spray her cough all over? Liza

Yes I totally agree. I remember Allie saying she would hold up camp in her basement when she was sick so not to spread.</end quote>

Totally irrelevant, but Allie tried to hold up camp in the basement. Ry would follow her downstairs and insist upon staying. I think that's quite a funny story. Hah!! What a goon.

Hi Seana,

did the doctor tell you, what germ caused the pneumonia? Does he know (or think of) your other daughter has cf?
If it is caused by something which could also be bad for the one with cf, her doctor should have a close look on her just in case...
My boyfriend got pneumonia last year after he broke his ribs and I "adviced" the doctor to do a sputum culture of him Lucky for me they did not find anything special.

Thank you all for the advice!!

I am going to the store tonight to look for the wipes.

The doc does know we have a CFer in the house. He is not a CF doc, so not sure how much he knows. I think we are going to quarintine Lauren to her room for the next 24 hours till the zithromax kicks in.

THANKS AGAIN

The best defense against spreading disease is for everyone in your family to wash their hand regularly, don't put your hands to your mouth, eyes, mouth, or nose, and make sure your daughter coughs into her arm and not her hands. Wipes are fine but washing hands is the best.

Just wondering --- two years ago a child in Max's daycare got Whooping Cough (Pertussis), so everyone at the daycare was put on Zithromax as a preventative. Would that be an option for Courtney? Liza

Seanna,

Last february my whole houshold had a respiratory virus. First my son had it , then me(both of ended up on zithromax) and got better. Then my husband got it and got pnuemonia too! He sounded awful!! He needed two rounds of antibiotics to get rid of it(no he does not have CF). He did wear a mask around the house because he was so worried about getting Maggie sick(withCF). Maggie did end up getting sick we got her right on the antibiotics, had her cultured and she got better without getter pneumonia , whew. I wish now I had my husband cultured the stuff he was coughing up, so we knew what we were dealing with. Maybe if your daughter actually coughs up some sputum you could have it cultured.

Take care,
Rebecca(mom to sammy7 no CF and Maggie 3 with CF)

Yikes seana.

Can courtney stay with a friend for a few days? Definately not something you want her to get (as others have said).

I ditto everything else, and I'll be praying and thinking of the family. Hope Lauren keeps her bugs to herself and recovers fast!
