Have any of you unintentionally gotten addicted to a painkiller?

After my surgery a weekago, I was put on IV demerol. At first every 2 hours for the first 2 days and then every 4. As great as my button is, I have been in alot of pain. NOT after surgery soreness, but intense burning and cramping in my stomach.

I was suppose to go home today, but since I (at the time) couldn't go more than 4 hours without being in pain and needing it, they won't send me home until I'm off of it.

My last dose was at 8:30 this morning. I've only had tylenol all day. Finally at 6:30 I was DONE.I have yet to get anything since they are trying to get in touch with the doc...but yeah I want some demerol. I am seriously hurting.

And while I think I have a legitamate hurt I also think maybe its all in my head. I am having the shakes really bad, and nausea, and being overly emotional...and over all MISERABLE....

Just curious if anyone else has been through this. How long till you got off it? Did you go cold turkery? Did they put you on something "lighter" to get you off something "bigger"?

Hey Jessica,

I went through somethng basically exactly like you are going through but I was on diloted (alot like demerol) for the exact same reason as you.

The withdrawl symptoms you are experiencing (shakes, emotional, nausia, etc) usually only last for 24 to 48 hours, you can ask for antinausia meds, which helps alot.

Just make sure, whatever you do, as hard as it is you don't go back on the pain meds, cause it only gets harder after that, stick with the tylenol. I ended up being on IV pain meds off and on for almost 3 months and my oxygen sats plummited quickly.

I did go cold turkey but I had a bad reaction to doing that, so they had to put me back on the pain meds and slowly tapper me off, which was no fun. Let your doctors know immediately if you start to get headaches or anything like that. It's really important to stay on top of whats going on around the pain meds. Let me know how it goes
