Okay I have been thinking alot about this in recent months. The first thoughts popped into my head when I read several posts (to me a surprising number) from people with CF with adhesive allergies.
I myself have adhesive allergies and find the white adhesive tape to be the worst. I have issues with all tapes though - paper tape, the clear tape, tegaderm, steri strips whatever you name it - it itches and drives my skin crazy.
Well I have noticed with recent hospitalizations and IV treatment that the more dry my skin is the worse the reaction under, around the tape.
Then I started to think - and forgive me if this has been mentioned or if it is common sense because the more I think of it the more common sense it seems to be. Maybe it is not an adhesive allergy. Maybe it is irritation caused by the extra salt that is released through our skin with our sweat. The area under the tape, tegaderm, IV dressing whatever it may be does perspire and with that comes some extra salt as given with CF. That extra salt dries out the skin and makes the adhesive itch more and makes it adhere even more to the skin than it would with an average person.
I don't know it is just a thought. I thought of this because I do not have any serious allergy symtpoms besides constant itching and occasional removal of skin -if there has been adhesive on my skin for very long periods. I also get some redness .. but that is mainly from all of the scratching and irritation from the itching.
I would just be interested to see some views on this. I thought about it at the beginning of the year - like I said there was a post about adhesive allergies or something and there was what I thought to be a high number of CFers that replied saying they too had adhesive allergies. I then started to think huh - maybe it is caused by something else.
I look forward to seeing what you guys think. Again sorry if this has been mentioned or has been documented somewhere and it is common knowledge lol - if it is I am slow lol.
Have a good day,
Lindsey
