Advice needed - should I take my allergy pill tonight?

I'm having my igE level tested in the am to see if it is elevated which would mean that I'm allergic to the aspergillus I recently started culturing. I wasn't told of any prep needed for this test but I'm wondering if my nightly dose of Clarinex will skew the results?

Any one have any experience with this?

no! do NOT take your allergy pill..... you should be free of your allergy pill for 24 hours before an allergy test.

Why are you taking clarinex? does claritin over the counter work for you?

Clarinex is loradatine. It passes through the liver once, and results in desloratadine. It passes through the liver a second time and results in 3-hydroxy desloratadine.

The bottom line is that whether you take Claritin or Clarinex, your body gets 3 hydroxy desloratadine. Efficacy is therefore identical.

Head to head studies of Zyrtec vs. Claritin and Allegra vs. Claritin show that Zyrtec and Allegra are much more powerful. Head to head studies of Zyrtec and Allegra demonstrate that they are identical in efficacy.

crap I'd already taken it. I guess I'll have to get another Rx. I'll post about my doctor's response. Claritan worked great for me when it was available as an Rx. When it went OTC I switched to Clarinex because I didn't want to pay OTC prices. I thought that Allegra made some tired.

Actually, it is ok to take an antihistamine (like clarinex,
claritin, allegra, zyrtec, etc.) when having allergy testing by
blood test. This is usually done by RAST or immunocap
testing which measures the level of IgE to a specific allergen, in
this case aspergillus. IgE levels are unaffected by the
antihistamine. You cannot, however, have skin testing
or subdermal testing for allergies after having an antihistamine
because in that case, the allergist is actually measuring the
reaction. Since the antihistamine reduces or even
suppresses the reaction, the test results will be bad. Here's
a couple links to RAST and immunocap testing:
Also, in my experience, allegra does not generally make patients
sleepy but zyrtec can. Claritin and Clarinex work well enough
for people with mild-moderate allergies. For moderate-severe
allergies, only zyrtec or allegra work. I hope that helps.
Good luck!

Momto3 that was incredibly helpful! Are you also in the medical field ... sounds like you know what you are talking about.

I agree Momto3 you did a great job of describing it.. Actually I was going to make a post about it last night, saying the same thing about IGE and serum testing, but I was way to tired to do it. Now I am glad that I was because you did a much better job than I ever could have explaining.

I loved learning all the stuff in Micro class... Are you in the medical field...
