Advice On Travel Insurance

We are taking the family on a vacation to Europe this summer - Disney Mediterranean Cruise! For us, it is a once in a lifetime sort of thing. My 10-yr old son has cf. We booked the trip in October but hit a health roadblock in Nov. He was hospitalized and then on home IV's through December. He just got off of his oral antibiotics a few weeks ago. The bug he cultured is a nasty one and we hope it doesn't come back. He is doing better and getting stronger, but I am fearful that CF will rear it's ugly head and interfere with our trip. I bought standard travel insurance when we booked the trip in October, but I don't know if that is good enough. I assume we'd get nailed with the whole pre-existing condition clause and be out lots of $. So we still have several months and I am wondering.... since he is maintaining and doing well... is there a recommendation for someone who would cover him? Or do we just keep our fingers crossed and see what happen? Would love to hear your advice/experience!

I advise calling the company that holds the insurance and ask specifically. I did this when my daughter purchased the insurance for one of the last Brooks and Dunn concerts this summer. I told them that she was on the waiting list for a double lung transplant and if she ended up being in the hospital or unable to travel at the time of the concert would she be able to use the insurance. They told me yes, so we kept it and ended up not needing it. They explained their definition of pre-existing was a problem currently being treated for. Yea, I know, CF is always being treated. That is why I recommend calling and asking, telling them your son has Cystic Fibrosis and could end up being admitted if he got a lung infection resulting in him not being able to make the trip. Here's the stickler though, they may refund his ticket and being a minor, one adult but maybe not the whole family. I'd ask about that too. Depending on their answer, I'd also ask the cruise company. Then... if they are unwilling to work with you, please spread the word. I am sure though, that the company holding the insurance will be good.
