Advice Please

Hi My CF nurse just emailed me. She really feels like I need to be doing some airway clearence of some sort since I can't use my vest. My incision is taking a longer time to heal because I am on steroids so it delays everything... I have tried the vest again but it rubs on my incision and makes me bleed....

SHe asked me if I want the acapella or flutter. I know what the flutter is but I don't know what an accapella really is...

Which do you think is better?

Personally I like the Accapella better. I have used both. The flutter is smaller but u have to have it in just the right angle when you breathe into it or it doesnt seem to work. There is a little more flexability in the Accapella. Also the accapella (choice) has a dail at the end that goes from 1-5 so you can change the frequency. The flutter doesnt have that (at least the last time I checked). If you have really good lung function, you might not think the accapella or the flutter even works, but they are better than nothing at all.

Have you tried padding your scar with a folded towel when you try your vest? It probably wont help, but its a thought. I couldnt use the vest when I had my gallbladder surgery (7-9 inch scar across my belly). They suggested that I do that after my surgery. My mom and now husband had to give me manual CPT while sitting up until I healed.

Acapella Choice!!! I've used the flutter, and it can be a bit hard to use. You have to sit in a certain position, you can't move around, etc or its not effective. The Acapella Choice works if you're sitting upright, reclined, etc. I love the Acapella, and will never ever go back to the flutter.

If you get the acapella choice...Jenn...don't use bleach to clean it, as always read the directions for cleaning it...Good luck in your decision!

My vote is also for the acapella. The flutter is such a pain because you do have to be in a certain position to use it correctly. Also, the acapella can be adjusted for how much resistance you need

I've also used both and vote for the Acapella choice. It works great for me and it's easy to clean (just boil for 10 minutes).

get both if you can! if one then I'd go with Acapella. get the old one NOT CHOICE if you can because it will be more effective for you since you are in the high range of pft. You see they used to have two versions a low and a high pft version. Now with the choice they've gone middle of the road - one size fits NONE if you ask me - and I don't find it very effective and your pfts are a lot higher than mine. FYI I would still qualify for the high version though with the numbers I demonstrate. Hope this makes sense.
