albuterol question

In the past I never used albuterol b/c it gave me terrible shakes and I just couldnt deal with it. I didnt need it for much, just coughing fits, so I used it VERY sparingly. I then started to use it (the puffer, MDI) daily in March, maybe, along with the HTS, to open my airways...blahblah, you know the deal.

Well I have been wondering recently if I am building up a tolerance to the alb puffer. I dont get shakes anymore practically ever. This week, I have been very tight feeling and like irritated (and inflamed) sounding cough. I have not necessarily had trouble breathing, but I need to take more deep breaths. My CPT lady says I sound fine, and last week my PFT's were in the 80's, exactly what they were two months ago.

I am wondering whether I should switch to the neb. Is the neb more effective at opening airways? I know it works faster. Will the Neb alb will help with my inflammation? Will it help more long term too? I am on 800 mgs of motrin for that though, so I shouldnt be inflamed...

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know if it helps with inflammation, but I know for me I never really saw much benefit from the puffer inhaler. I always had to use the neb treatment for albuterol because I just didn't see improvement otherwise. For me I think it was there was more moisture with the neb treatment than the inhaler.

Either way I hope that you are able to figure something out it is very frustrating when you feel tight or like you aren't breathing as well as you should be.

Take Care,
Linds

Also a thought - could it be allergy related that is why you are feeling tight? Maybe it isn't so much that you need albuterol as something for allergies if that is the case. I only bring it up cause I have a harder time around this time of year with allergies.

You may very well be more tolerant of the puffer. I know my son uses the puffer first, but when that doesn't work, we go for the albuterol nebs. The puffer isn't a constant flow into the lungs like the nebs. It really does seem to be more effective for my son. The puffer doesn't make him shaky, but the nebs do. He hates the way alb makes him feel.

One thing I might mention too is that you may sound fine to your CPT lady, but Jordan's doc told me that asthmatics can feel a tightness even before the wheezing can be detected. He told him to do a neb treatment at the first sign of tightness and that it may help avoid the full blown asthma attack. Ask your doc if you should do morning and evening nebs. Our CF doc would like Jordan to do them 3 times a day, but I am lucky to get him to do 2.

Thanks guys!

Lindsey--I do take allergy meds, zyrtec and flonase. And yes I usually do have problems at this time of year but not like this. I get the itchy eyes, and throat.

Stacey--I think I will call the doc and at least try a small dose of the alb neb. I dont usually have tightness with asthma issues, but maybe I am developing those.

Keep the responses coming, I like to hear what ppl have to say. Thanks again!
