oops it replyed before I typed anything.

I was wondering what else my choices are besides the vest? I hate the vest, remember I was not dx till 29 and have not been using the vest for more then two years, if that. But I need a little break from it if possible. It bothers me, even just looking at it makes my stomach turn....

I know thier is a flutter, and a percussor, I am intersted in both of these, I am going to CF clinic soon and I want to ask my doctor to write a script for something more portable and easier to use. Even if it is for when I sleep over someones house, or if I need a little break from the Jack hammer, I mean my vest.

What have you guys used besides the vest? and have you found it to be as effective as the vest?

Thanks,

Jennifer

I have the flutter, but never got the hang of positioning it right so I dont know how well it works yet. I use to have an electric percusser when I was a kid. It reminded me of a jackhammer with a cup on the end of it. It worked well, but if you leaned it too much it hurt as it clapped. U know I currently have the vbest & although I dont think its as productive as I would like its convenient. Since I am small its not a big deal once we got the settings adjusted for my needs. In the ideal world (besides not having CF) I would have someone come in & do my CPT manually. That is with the time (since I could afford a maid & chef also) & money! Can help ya out much, sorry!

Hi Jennifer, I get super tired of doing the vest too. It's such a drag, but it does do wonders I think. When I'm too lazy to put that thing on and sit there shaking for 60 minutes, I use a percussor on my chest and sides. That seems to work well for me, especially when I know I need to do something but I am too stubborn to put the vest on. Other than that, do you excercise? That's the only way around CPT is if you're really active...take up tennis, horseback riding or something like that. Just a thought.

I'm with Melissa. I'm not big of a fan of the flutter.

When I went to Geneva for 3 months, and brought my Vest with me, it exploded and I had to use the flutter for a bit. It didn't compare at all to my friend the Vest.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Vest isn't even available in most of Europe (or at least it wasn't in 2002 when I was in Switzerland).

I feel so lucky to be in the US and to have access to the latest technology.

But onec again, every person and every pair of lungs is diff. So what works for one person may not work for another. Or vice versa.

I hated the Flutter, and the Vest. There's also something called an Acapella (same idea as the Flutter) and I hated that too. lol, I'm a pain. I just use the good old fashioned beating. Manual CPT... Mike beats my back and sides with cupped hands. Good stuff.

I use a PEP device, pretty sure it's similar to the Flutter and Acapella but a little different. It works ok but it makes me out of breath so it's hard to get the motivation to do it! I like manual CPT, and exercise.

My own 2 cents...The vest is BY FAR the best clearance device that we have, and then some. That doesn't mean that there aren't decent clearance devices, about the only one I havent tried (and it's coming to me soon via fedex) is the acapella. From what I know about the acapella is it helps the most to move the stuff, but not to break it loose. The flutter is MEH...Not all that great, and probably way below anything that could seriously help out. To me, it comes down to one real hardcore vest treatment a day, and then "Anything that helps" afterwards. To me, there is absolutely nothing more powerful, purposeful, and efficient than the vest. Yes it does suck bad. There are several nights where lazy wins out over the vest. But compared to everything else, the vest wins by far in every category.

As far as advice? I don't know what to say. It sucks to need clearance nightly and deal with being an adult and wanting to be irresponsible. The best advice I can give is to stick with the vest, and not like it...Channel your hate against CF in a positive way, and use your vest. To me even hardcore exercise can't hold a candle to the vest...It's just such an amazing invention for us!
