Altitude test to fly?

So the boys had their test today. The technician had the exact same explanation as he did on the phone (15% oxygen on the plane, so 15% oxygen during the test). Maybe he needs some education?

Josh started with sats of 97 on room air and dipped down to 91 once during the 15 minutes. Mostly he stayed around 95. Poor Jesse has a cold but he started with 95 and went to 89 but stayed mostly around 91.

The tech said they need to stay above 86 to pass (fly w/o supplemental o2), so they're both fine to fly.

What bothered me was the doctor had already written the ok letter and the nurse brought it to us before they even did the test! If she was that confident, couldn't she have faxed it to us and avoided a trip into Boston on a snowy Monday morning? gggggrrrr

Anyway, glad that's over and we have one less thing we have to lug with us on the plane!

Enjoy your trip. It is always better to be safe then sorry. She did pick the worse day. If this was last Monday we have passed in the hallways.

Hmm, I would say do not buy any property in the Everglades from that tech. He might have been playing a video game during the physics class that dealt with gas mixes and the atmosphere. Personally, as an RT who deals with people's breathing problems daily, having someone breathe hypoxic air intentionally is irresponsible at the least, and could be dangerous to the poor patient. I ran this past my coworkers and the PFT friend from the clinic, and none had every heard of such a procedure. And all thought the 15% story was ridiculous. Oh well...

Have a safe trip and a wonderful holiday time in Atlanta!

No, we are in Washington and went to the U of W in Seattle. Quite snowy and slushy going over in the dark, but better on the way home.

Jane: Thanks, I'll do some more reading. Seems tho that it would be easier to do a calculation based on ground level saturations. Starving the already oxygen-challenged seems bizarre to me! However, others get paid the big bucks for these kinds of decisions!
