thanks for your input everyone! i also had a lot of the same questions as Ladybug. Ports still really scare me though (i also have vein phobia issues!). Hopefully i wont have to have one in the near future.

Just wondering does anyone who has a port travel frequently? Im guessing from LightnLife's (which i really appreciated watching! thanks) you can do a lot of the care yourself? Are there any constraints in regards to this?

Thanks

Maybe its just me but I still dont get the vein phobia? R u afraid they wont find a vein?? or is it like being afraid of veins like being afraid of needles??

But I also dont understand because the port is so u dont hvae to use ur veins at all...they look and find which major vein they can go into to put the line in and u deal with ur port from then on...bloo draws, IVs, nething else it all go through the top of ur port...it's also good if u have alot of scarring on ur veins in ur arms because it will give u time to heal the scarring...

I hope I can go many more years without needing a port. I'm now terrified of getting one!</end quote></div>

What are you terrified about?</end quote></div>

Are you terrified or have a mental block regarding it. I am not terrified in the actual procedure, maintaining it etc. My problem falls into the fact that it is then a part of me until it goes bad, I died or I dont need it anymore. To me its sort of like having to use 02 or going on home iv's for the first time....its a reminder of the progression, but unlike the other 2 examples it doesnt go away!!

I guess its just so "permanent" compared to a PICC. I think my worries of being self concious, unsexy & whatever unknown feelings come with it.

Sorry got off track here Ladybug....

Hi,
We have flown a number of times with our son, who has a port and a g-tube. Security has never said a word about either. Though the last time we flew the security guy opened our suitcase filled with meds, a nebulizer and feeding tube equipment and he said ,"Wow! what IS all this stuff?" A teachable moment, that!
My son (11) likes his port when he's sick and accessed and still (after five years of this!)really HATES the monthly flushes, which are done by a homecare nurse.

Ports scare me for a lot of reasons. Getting one put in, maintaining it, the things that could go wrong with it. I don't like the idea of having that in me and being stuck with needles. Like Jazzy said, the fact that it's more permanent than a picc and to me it would feel like I am sicker than I was before.
