anti depressants

I am not a cf'er but i take care of a child with cf. I have been through a lot of different stresses in recent years that I am seeking therapy for and I will not go into details.

I know this has been a topic on here before about anti-depressants. My question is and I think Light and Life can help me with this. LOL! But i have been taking Lexapro 20 mgs for approximately 6 months or so. I have noticed a lot of difference. My hubby has too. Improvements that is. But the one thing I can't handle anymore is the sexual side effects. Lack of therefor. I talked to my doctor a little about this today at my visit. She switched me to Effexor XR Starting out at 37.5 the first week and then the 2nd week it increases to 75 mg.

After reading some of the side effects I am not sure I want to use this medicine. It basically has the same side effects plus I read it is very difficult to come off of.

If anyone has expereinced this med could you please inform me.? I have enough to deal with dealing with Austins CF and everything else.

Thanks!

Hi Paula,
So glad you have confidence in my ability to answer the question! LOL. I was on Effexor XR (extended release) and did much better with it than with Lexapro. I don't remember whether it affected me in terms of libido, but just based on what the statistical evidence shows, only 3% of people have the sexual side effects.

Remember to give yourself some lee-way with the adjustment period as you shift from one med to another. Based on my own experience, I would say to make sure you take the medication at the same time every day. I found that I got extremely agitated, flustered and irritable when I waited too long in between doses. That's how a lot of extended release stuff is designed. It's great that it stays in your system for awhile, but once it's no longer in your blood stream...eek!

Paula, I don't have any advice about the new med, but wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you. Lauren is a wealth of information, and I knew she could help you.

I hope the new med helps you feel better, and that you don't experience too many of the side effects. ((((((hugs)))))) to you my friend.
