Antibiotic Resistance

Hi all,

So, since Nov.'08,I have consistantly cultured very resistant PA. In 11/08, I was having fevers and not responding to the abx I was on. The sputum culture showed that I was resistant to everything but Tobra and Colistin. I was treated with those two drugs, and my FEV1 recovered. Then, in April '09, a similar scenario played out - fevers, not responding to abx. My docs did a bronch and found I was now also resistant to Tobra. My FEV1 increased slightly from the beginning of the exacerbation, but stayed a good 10% pts below my baseline. Now, I am on my 3rd week of IV's. I am still having mild temp elevations (no higher than 99.8) and my FEV1 is another 5% pts below what it was after the April course of abx.

So, I guess my question for everyone is has anyone had a similar experience? I know that abx resistance patterns can change. Have you ever been resistant to almost everything, then become sensitive to mult. drugs again?

Thanks for your input!

Mary,

I just wanted to say I'm in the same boat right now. I used to be very sensitive to lots of things and then over a one-year period my docs had me on way too many meds over way too long of a time (3 med combos for 2 weeks and then another 3-4 weeks of DIFFERENT med combos). This was done for two exacerbations and I'm pretty sure that is why now my p.a. is multi-resistant. I'm just speculating, but that's my guess since before this I had great coverage options.

Anyway, I suggest synergy testing if possible. It takes WEEKS to get back (like 6-8), so maybe they could do it on the stuff they just bronched? Just an idea.

All my best. I know this is very very frustrating and I hope you find some peace with it. I still haven't.

Also, hopefully others on here will have some insight into gaining back their sensitivities, as I do know it can happen, just not sure how often.

Someone who has been writing me privately since June has used the info here to deal with antibiotic resistant PA:
<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://healthgazelle.com/quinineandpseudomonas.shtml">http://healthgazelle.com/quinineandpseudomonas.shtml</a>

When this individual did need to go on antibiotics recently, I was told that the PA was sensitive to 15 drugs whereas previously it had only been sensitive to 7. In addition to consuming quinine, this individual also is taking a combo of sea salt, glyconutrients, and coconut oil.

Good luck with this.
