Any help with relief?

Hey, I know this is a CF site, and this sounds dumb, but I cannot stop coughing.

I have broncitits & laryngitis. I have an antibiotic (so things don't get worse and go to my chest) and I have cough syrup with codiene. However, I just can't stop this hacking cough.

I'm doing my vest & nebs more often and try to clear crap out of my chest, but I just cannot get any relief.

Any suggestions that have helped you in the past. This is so annoying!

Thanks,
KELLI

Does the cough feel like its in your chest, or is the back of your throat "tickling" you and causing that nagging "I need to cough" thing? If so, I think your problem is more your sinuses than your chest. There are only three things I can recommend that have worked for me;

1) Try something cold, like chewing on ice chips or a snow cone or a slushie. That may soothe your throat enough to help you get at least a small amount of relief.

2) Make yourself a nasal irrigation solution; get a bottle of purified water, add two tablespoons of kosher salt and one tablespoon of baking soda to it, shake it up really well, and shoot about 20 cc's in each nostril, aiming towards the back of your head, not up. Then snort it back so it gets in all of your sinus cavities and then blow your nose. It will burn, but the salt will dry up your sinuses and should help (if not stop) a postnasal drip for at least a few hours.

3) If the cough is definitely in your chest, use your hypertonic saline (assuming you do it as part of your normal treatments) and force yourself to cough HARD. You might throw up as a result, but you'll get most of the mucus that's bothering you out.

Sorry, but those are the only things I can think of. I hope you get relief soon!

I was also thinking of something cold. Like if you have REALLY cold ice water, gulp it down really fast. If its a tickly cough, I have also heard of having a salty snack...I have never tried that, but hear that it works. If like Lilith says its post nasal drip, try the irrigation with salt water. That will also help to get the stuff up and out. I cant really think of anything else, I hope you feel better soon!

Kelli,

Depends on why you are coughing....are you coughing because you feel congested or because you very "irritated"? If you don't feel congested back off the CPT and anything other than your bronchodilator. Start taking motrin, 800mg, TID and take a hot shower. If you have bronchitis it will help you feel better. If you're congested keep doing what you are doing plus the motrin and shower...as you can see my life revolves around motrin and hot showers.
