Any Info on Vancomycin

Hello, I have questions for any one here that has been on Vancomycin ( spelling may not be right). I start my first dose tomorrow morning at the hospital at 8 am. I'm wondering what side affects most people have had? I'm also wondering what to expect as far as side affects?Thanks to all in advance,

Melissa,I've been on Vancomycin off and on over the last 14 years. Watch out for what is called Red Man's syndrome. Symptoms of this include itching ( i itched from head to toe, and I mean every in between) and you may get red kind of like a rash. I have to do benadryl (50mg) before each dose. If you start itching, tell the nurse right away and they will stop the dose and inject benadryl into your iv ( this should take care of it for you) then they will restart your dose. They can also run vancomycin over a long period of time, i think they can run it in up to over a 4 hour period, this would help on the symtoms too. I too got the red man's syndrome mine is run over two hours and I get 40mg benadryl most of the time thats enough but when I get it alot I need 45mg. You can get one mg for each Kilogram you weigh sometimes the will give a little but more but that shouldn't be done often.

My husband has terrible tightness and shortness of breath when he inhales Vanco for more than a week. So far no reactions from the IV form

Hello, Thank you for sharing your information with me about Vancomycin. I got my first dose this morning and every thing went well. I got a little red but no itching. I will be getting it over an hour period. Once again I thank you all for sharing this with me.
