So when I went to the doc the other day, he looked in my mouth and was like wow...you have thrush...if you hadnt read my blog. He gave me CLOTRIMAZOLE, which is a med for antifungals. The med is a big circular shaped pill, that needs to dissolve in your mouth. The first time I used it, yesterday afternoon, I sipped up some water and swished it and the pill in my mouth to dissolve the pill. It took FOREVER btw, but then I looked at the pill info packet and it said DONT drink water or eat food while pill is dissolving.

Has anyone been on this pill before? Am I using it right, without the water? Does it make a big difference either way? And are there many side effects? I am on it for two weeks, four times a day! Blahhhhh...

Hey there,

Yes I am actually taking this currently. I have to take it 3 times a day for post transplant care right now.

You ARE supposed to let the tablet dissolve on your tongue WITHOUT water. You are actually not supposed to drink or eat anything for like 15 minutes after you take the pill as well. Sometimes I forget and drink something shortly after but I have not had any problems.

You have to give the med some time to work on the crud in your mouth. I have found too that just letting it rest on my tongue it does take forever. If I rub the tabley between my tongue and the roof of my mouth it helps it dissolve a little faster and it is still getting the med to the area it needs to be at.

It is an annoying thing yes, but it does work. I haven't noticed any outrageous side effects. I know you can sometimes get an odd taste in your mouth from the med itself but I don't think it causes anything crazy.

Just want to add I have the med information and it says that nausea and vomitting may occur with this med - but subside during treatment to contact the doc if it continues or worsens. I have never had that symptom but it is listed.

Just to put this out there if this pill does NOT work for you after a few days maybe ask your doc if they can prescribe you Diflucan to take for a few days. I used to take that pre transplant for thrush - 1 pill a day for a week at a time - and it always helped and that is a simple pill that you just swallow, so it is easy easy easy.

Take Care and hope the thrush clears up soon.

I have taken this, too, and it's as Lindsey said. You let it dissolve w/o water or food.

I just wanted to say that I learned a lot from your question Caitlin and "WOW" what a super complete answer you gave Linds. Thanks to both of you!
