About 5 years ago the nurse flushed my port and I coded on them. Thety never figured out what it was, the port was in good working condition. They did an mri and didnt see any blood clots. They thought maybe an infection in the port that was pushed straight to my heart. I felt the burning pain move from my port to my heart as soon as he pushed in the saline. Im scared about gettnig a port now. Also now I get blood clots evry time with my picc lines. I take blood thinners when on piccs but still get them. Does anyone have any idea about what happened?

Also does anyone have problems with blood clots and picc lines?

I dont have a port, but I do think I had a blood clot in my picc line in Oct... My arm hurt really bad and was red and swollen and the arm and everything in it seemed huge. The picc line came out and he told me to take low dose asprin to see if it would thin it out. It worked and didn't have too many problems after that. There were some phantom picc pains here and there after it came out but I don't think any lasting issues.

I have never had that issue with my port but when I was getting my transplant evaluation I was asking them to use my port for one of my tests and the person told me no at the time for some reason - I can't remember right now.

He did tell me though that IF I ever went to the hospital be it ER or regular admit and I was having serious infection symptoms NOT to let them use or flush my port for risk of flushing the bacteria throughout my system. He didn't tell me what it would do but said it could cause some pretty major issues. Not sure if your situation is what he was talking about or not though.

Sorry to hear that happened to you and I can understand your hesitation in getting another port after that experience.

Wow Alisha.. not sure I can offer any insight as to why you coded, but I do know that ports greatly increase your risk of infection. I developed a systemic infection from a port immediately pre-tx, and the doc did not want to give me another one post-transplant. Because piccs give me blood clots every time, getting another port was my only option. I access it myself when I can and am as sterile as I possibly can be. I don't trust anyone else accessing it, but I know that it can't be avoided sometimes.
