Anyone have thrush?

I've never heard it be related to CFRD, ever. I don't have CFRD, and I get thrush when ever I'm put on DS Bactrum, or any other kind of strong oral med. I get it on the roof of my mouth though... never my tongue. I dunno, water helps me a little, but it doesn't bother me until it starts to get sore from the loss of skin. I just deal with it.

Risa, I like Biotene mouthwash as well as their toothpaste, it isn't as harsh as regular mouthwash or toothpaste and has enzymes in them. I do use Nystatin if it gets bad enough, every IV round seems to really bring out the yeast in me. I even culture it in my lungs after awhile and then they do systemic antifungals, they don't like to use them because my ability to clot gets out of control, my INR shoots right up there...the docs stop my Coumadin immediately once I am put on that drug. (Diflucan). Yogurt is another great thing to prevent it, also the tabs (acidophillus). Hugs, Jenn

Whether you call it thrush or not it is due to imbalance of good bad bacteria, that is why it so often happens when on antibiotics since they indiscriminately kill both good and bad--this is also why women have probelms with lots antibiotcs--I will leave it at that for all the men who dont want to know.

Anyway I take probiotic capsules and it solves all problems. You can get acidophilus or one that has a couple additional bacteria in there. I woudl recommend getting a type that is kept refrigerated as there are plenty that are at room temp but more often they are less potent and can be harsher on the stomach in my experience. I try to take 1 pill a day for maintenance and up to 6 when on antibiotics, ease your way up as it can cause stomach discomfort or loose stools.

Thrush is very common in CFers since we are on a lot of antibiotics a lot of times. The antibiotics kill the "good" bacteria and the "bad" bacteria. Without the good bacteria to fight off overgrowth of other organisms, these organisms, particularly yeast, begins to thrive.

Here is a link to an article about thrush, what causes it and how it is treated. There are lozenges for it as well as antifungal medications such as fluconozole.

A lot of you have mentioned how Biotene has helped you. Just to clarify, Biotene doesn't eradicate the thrush. It is solely designed to treat dry mouth in order to help avoid further oral problems (like overly dry, cracked tongue, canker sores, etc.) Biotene works by stimulating the mouth to produce saliva, thereby making things more moist. This is good, but not always:

1. If you have a lot of sugar in your saliva (if you've got CFRD for example), you will only be feeding the yeast.

2. Biotene is flavored with Xylitol, which is a type of sweetener. That will also feed the yeast.

I'm not arguing that some people may benefit from using biotene when they've had thrush. However, it's far more likely that the positive change you experience with Biotene is coincidental as the thrush heals on its own.
