Anyone homeschool

I was just wondering if anyone homeschools? My son has been in preschool 3 weeks and has missed 5 days. He seems to catch everything and recently has been committed to Tobi on one month and off one month he has been in the hospital over 20 times in 4 years. He is five. He has a g-tube and port and the school seems pretty nervous with him. They do not have a full time nurse on staff and the school has had mold issues that we were not told until we read the local newspaper yesterday. My older daughter also with cf does well at school. My huband wants them homeschooled really bad. We have a huge local homeschool group and they offer many social activites and sports, spelling bees, science fairs and on and on. Anyone with any imput.

I was homeschooled along with my brothers and sister, I had two brothers with cf also. My mom just wanted to homeschool us but since we did have CF it helped us not get sick so much, at least I think so, then you can schedule all the treatments you need and not have to worry about missing the bus etc....

And I didn't turn out weird or anything!!!!!!!!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">(at least I don't think so!)<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

It could be that your son has to get used to being in a school with germs and other kids. Preschool is hard on all kids, so CF kids would have it worse. They are going from a relatively germ free environment (your house) to one where there are germs all around.
It seems like him and your daughter have varying degrees of CF. Is he worse than her right now? If she is doing well at school it is going to be hard to pull her away from that to homeschool. She has friends and likes school so it would be unfair to take her away. Does it have to be both kids or no kids in homeschooling

The only other thing is I would do a lot of research on the homeschooling group and why they homeschool their kids. If you are not religious and that is why a lot of the kids in the group are homeschooled that could be an issue. Homeschooling can be great but it is also expensive and requires a lot of work on your behalf.

I am a teacher of little kids and was in public schools my whole life and I think i turned out fine health wise

I was never home schooled & have my issues about doing such, but my post isnt about that. I just want to point out that it is very hard when kids are in preschool & early grades. The hygeine is quite awful. My daughter (no CF) got every unusual bug in pre k more than the usual colds etc. Its quite gross to think where some of their hands have been. To say its easier one way or the other is questionable since there are pros & cons to both. I guess many people who homeschool do it for the educational benefits (more one on one) where the CF community tends to think of health issues as much as educational. Definitely investigate because it is a big undertaking. Good Luck!

When DS was diagnosed wcf and I asked about daycare, his doctor told me as long as it was a small daycare. When I explained he was signed up for a center he said, as long as they keep the age groups separated -- mainly kept the toddlers away from the babies because they're the germiest. And I concur -- lately DS has his finger up his nose most of the time, yesterday I caught him CLEANING the top of the toilet seat with my facial brush AND if I brush his teeth while he's in the bathtub, he uses his toothbrush to wash his "other" body parts.

DS's daycare has a separate room for the babies, then the 1-2 year olds are together. 3-4 year olds.... School age kids away from the younger kids 'cuz they tend to bring stuff back that's going around the schools. They've got a fairly strict policy about sick kids -- if your child is sick, you WILL come get them, you will take them to the doctor or keep them home until their symptom free or the doctor says they're okay. I once picked up DS early for a retirement party and they were changing another child's diaper and were going to change his next. They wore gloves, which they changed after each child and they disinfected the changing table. I hear stories from coworkers about how at home daycares, they line all the kids up in row and change diaper after diaper after diaper.
