How long have you been going? How often do you have tune-ups? Have you ever been to another CF center? etc etc.

Post or IM me.

i have been going to USC for 5 years...

I tend to have tune-ups every 1 1/2 to 2 years...

I use to go to Children's Hospital in LA before this one but USC has been my only adult CF center. Honest thruth...they are awesome....

The Doctor is a really nice man and he listens well when you have questions and he is honest when he answers my questions...because he tells me sometimes what I don't want to hear.

The Nurse that helps him is really helpfull...if you call her she will return your calls and help you right away...

I can honestly say i am more than satisfied with my CF center...again that is only my opinion.

Ditto what Clara said above. I used to go to Children's in LA, and have been going to USC University Hospital for 11 years, since I was 21. I think they're great and the nurses (there are 2 of them) are super and do return your calls quickly which I love.

I just get tune ups when I need them. Lately it's been about 2x/year. Never been to another adult cf center, just USC.

There are two other people on this site that I know of that also go to USC Univ.

CaliSali - how long have you been going there? How often do you get tune ups? Are you new there?

This is my fourth year going to the CF clinic. Before I went to USC I went to Stanfords Childrens Hospital (they were amazing there btw)

I am hospitalized about two times a year... the LA air helps to put me in there more then I would like.

USC is very aggressive with their treatment stradegy, so if you are the type to want to try alternative methods before going straight into the hospital for IVs it might not be the right place for you. When I was at stanford I was given many more options before the solution of IV antibiotics was brought up. At USC you have to be a little more aggressive and stand up for yourself if you want to try oral antibiotics instead of going straight into the hospital.

The staff and doctors are very helpful and friendly, especially Debbie and Diane (the wonderful nurses that everyone is talking about) they are on the ball and will get you whatever you need. I didnt care for the center origionally when I started going there because I did not feel like I was being given choices about my care and that they were simply telling me what to do. However, now after learning the way I need to approach situations and getting to know the CF team better I have become much more satisfied with the center as a whole.

However, I think USC University Hospital itself is below adverage. I have had a large number unnecessary problems there on multiple visits. If you are not on top of things at all time you might get overlooked and have to stay in the hospital longer then you need to be there ( I go home with a PICC line and home IVS, so I am ushually in the hospital about 5 days). My personal opinion is that they are disorganized, and their billing alwasy seems to take forever.

The CF team is great at USC and take great care of their CFers, however USC hospital has made me consider changing clinics so that I dont have to deal with them anymore.

I dont mean to be negative but when you are having to go to the hospital two times a year you want it to be as simple as possible, you are there because you are sick and being there should not be a stressfull situation while you are trying to get better.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

MCPappy,

I agree with you. Debbie, Diane, Dr. Rao, Paul and the rest of the team are outstanding. A little conservative at times, but they care greatly about their patients and want to do the best they can to help you stay healthly. The new center building works out very well. I think they have some room for improvement (who doesn't?), but are really working hard to be the best possible center. Kudos to all of them.

Regarding the hospital, that's another story. I wish they would move the clinic to a better hospital. Everytime I go there I have numerous problems, which I haven't had at other hospitals. As you said, the billing is a nightmare, but that's only part of it. Not the worst hospital, but they should listen to Debbie and Diane and improve their practices.
