Anyone with Diabetes?

I was just told that I have Diabetes. The thing I'm most worried about is not being able to eat what I want. The doctor I saw said that I wouldn't have to worry, I could pretty much eat whatever because of the CF and the weight thing and they would tailor the insuling/pills to what I eat. I went to some classes about it, and was told by the nurse that I need to limit my carb. intake at each meal to 60-75 carbs a meal. But I eat huge amounts at dinner and have a horrible sweet tooth, don't like veggies, love potatoes, corn, rice, etc. My question for anybody else that has diabetes is - can you eat whatever you want, or do you have to watch what you eat and count carbs? Thanks,Martha 29 w/CF

I have CF Related Diabetes and your doctor was right, you won't have to worry about what you eat. Was the class you went to specifically about CF Diabetes? It's still a really new thing. The diabetes specialist nurses that I've seen are clueless about how it works. My diet hasn't changed since I was diagnosed with the diabetes a year ago. I use fast acting insulin, Humoloug, that I only take right when I eat. I feel alot better since I started using it, and I've gained weight. The CF Foundation has some published lit. on CFRD you should be able to get from your clinic.Debbie23 w/ CF

Hi, Ive had cf related diabetes for 23 years now. You can eat pretty much what you want once you master how the food that you eat affects you. I take long acting insulin once daily and i know when it peaks and when it is starting to taper off, which helps when it comes to eating sweets. I am just like you , I love mashed potatoes, rice and never liked or ate vegetables. I have a lovely sweet tooth, and only eat my sweets when i know i can have them. I test my blood sugar 6 - 8 times in a day to keep a tight control on my blood sugar. It has helped me see just how my body reacts to certain foods , so i know how much i can generally have of it. It takes a while to get the hang of it, but once you do, you shouldnt have too many problems with it. ~ Diane 39 / cf / diabetes / b.cepacia

Hi,I´m 41 and started taking insulin last december. i still eat whatever and as much as I want, I just have to count the carbs and take enough insulin for what I eat. In the beginning it seems a little complicated, but you get used to it.As most people eat the same things very often, after a time you know how much insulin you need for it. Just make sure to have some sweets with you all the time, so that you can eat something, if the blood-sugar should get too low (could happen, if you took too much insulin or are doing sports).Wish you the best!Uli from Germany (but at the moment I am in New Orleans and it´s great!!)

I did change my diet a bit. I started eating things that have whole grains. I eat tons of fruits and veggies. I also drink a lot of milk. Mostly, I look for organic stuff or food in the natural food section. I find that my sugars stay down a bit when I stay away from things with preservatives. I can still eat what I want as long as it is natural. I also drink a tea I'm not sure of the actual name. It is translated to mean "bitter melon". My sugars have been pretty normal for the last few months now and I have gained some weight (3 lbs). I never had much of a sweet tooth, so staying away from most desserts has never bothered me.
