Yes, medicare will pay for nurses to come in to your home but they will not pay for home IV's (Medicare part D will cover some of the IV meds up to an extent depending on your policy, but none of the supplies or service charges that infusion companies charge). I am hearing that will change in the next few years though. I hope so...I can't stand being hospitalized for weeks when I know I can take care of myself at home.
My part D changed this year to begin covering generic IV's at generic prices. In the past, they were considered specialty and were very expensive. What that means for me is if my treatment involves those covered drugs then it is possible for me to stay home next time as I am very self sufficient when it comes to accessing my port, dressing changes and IV's. I typically buy my port supplies even now (they weren't covered by Medicare) and just write them off in my taxes.
I hope this helps...while I am glad that I have any insurance, it is definitely a very flawed insurance with strange coverage rules etc...
