Appetite Stimulants

I was curious about something since I have yet to use any type of appetite stimulant unless you consider the side affects of Prednisone LOL!

My understanding is that those who use it are using it long term and because the lack of appetite is an ongoing problem.

BUT

has anyone used it just during an exacerbation where loss of appetite &/or weight loss becomes a real issue?

So I guess shorter term until the appetite, weight loss or exacerbation are under control....

Hey, Melissa!

How you been feelin since we talked from lock up? Hope all is going well and you're able to rest now that Jazzy is back in school....

So, they had me on Megace in the hospital 40 mg twice a day cause i managed to loose about 8 lbs in the 3 days I was nauseated... I gained it all back within about 3 days of being on megace! So, aside from being a little paranoid about potential side effects of taking long term progesterone, I asked for a script to take home for it. My clinic said they have lots of people on it long term. I was shocked, cause this was the first time EVER anyone has even mentioned an appetite stimulant, and I have always struggled with gaining weight. So, I took it home figuring I'll take it once a day (still not too keen on taking so much hormone on a regular basis... don't know why) and twice a day if I feel sick or have a crummy day when I have NO appetite.

Thus far, its seemed to have worked well... I haven't really gained the amazing amount of weight I did in those 3 days in the hospital, but I don't think I'm loosing either, and my stomach does growl quite often througout the day. The thought of eating doesn't seem like such a "chore" anymore.

So, hope this gives you some insight as to my experience with it. Good luck!!!

Josh tried marinol and then megace when he was very sick last year. He didn't like the feeling marinol gave him. His quote "people pay to feel like this?"

The megace made him a little emotional. PMS kind of thing. Neither one really gave him much appetite so we only used each for a week or two.

Before that both boys tried the antihistamine that also works to increase appetite (I'm sorry I don't remember the name). It made them feel sleepy so we couldn't do it during the day, finally gave up.

I've been really sick this year and have lost a lot of weight. My doctor gave me Prednisone in the last couple of weeks, and I feel like I've gained so much weight back in such a short amount of time.

I had no will to eat at all, and I felt like I was literally WASTING AWAY. I had no energy and my clothes were just falling off. The thought of food made me SICK. I was having to force food down, if I could even do that. Most of the time I would just pick at my plate and make it look like I wasn't on the verge of throwing up. I thought I was going crazy, like I had an eating disorder or something.

Doctor said it was all of my sinus drainage causing me to be sick to my stomcah and gave me the Prednisone. Now, I am eating three meals a day and I'm actually getting hungry for those three meals a day. I don't care about any kind of side effects of Prednisone.. It has helped me get my life back.
