Appetite Stimulants

I have taken Marinol, Megace, and the antihistamine Jane mentioned which is called Periactin (or generic, ciproheptadine). Megace is the only one that works for me. I took it short term while in the hospital and gained a bunch of weight back. I went off it and maintained my weight on my own, but when I got sick again, I went back on and have been taking it ever since. So the answer to your question is yes, I believe you CAN take an appetite stimulant on a short term basis.

If you've lost a lot of weight and have very little desire for food, the medication is a way to put some pounds back on and actually enjoy the thought of food again. But as was mentioned earlier, Megace is a hormone. I personally LOVE the side effect of no longer having periods, but some might be bothered by that. Periactin does make you drowsy and didn't really make me want to eat anyway. Marinol made me a little loopy at first, but after a couple days I didn't notice a difference...but still, it didn't make me want to eat. One other medication not mentioned yet is Remeron. It is primarily a very mild antidepressant, but also has the appetite inducing side effect. I took that for awhile in conjunction with Megace and Wellbutrin so I suppose it was supposed to make me a little happier and a little fatter!!

Anyway, this is one of the few things I know a thing or two about so if you have any more questions, feel free to PM.

Have any of yall tried lactobacillus acidophillus our doc turned us onto a new all natural way to aid in digestion. Which in turn made my wife hungrier and her BM's more tolerant. Some doctor from somewhere came up with this newer theory that this probiotic that aids in quicker and more efficient digestion, would help CFer's digest food quicker so that they would feel hungry soon after. Our doc told us about it and that some other docs were skeptical about its claims. But, after about 5 months of using it she says she can't go a day know without it or else she will feel the same old way without it. Also just to give it some more praise my wife at the time was 94 lbs. now she is 111 lbs. the heaviest shes ever been! Now I know it's not all due too this but I'm sure it played a factor. You can find it in the vitamin aisles of drug stores, and it's found in yogurt (about 1 cup would equal your daily amount).

i was on 200mg twice a day (5 of those wafers twice a day!!!) of megace while in the hosp. it made me a little moody as well. not real bad, i don't think, but i'm always a touch mood anyways. i think it worked real well; i was able to gain 12 lbs in about as many days.

i discontinued use after the hosp just because i didn't want to be on a female hormone long term. i don't feel any negative efects of quitting like that. i have been warned about going on and off, on and off of it, but being on for a bit then quitting shouldn't be too troublesome.

and just a little side note to jane's comment by josh "people pay to feel like this." the innebriating effect of maryjane is due to a combination of the scores of cannibinoids and alkaloids foaun d in the cannibis plant. marinol is but a few (perhaps even just one) of these. so while it may provide a dopey effect while stimulating apetite, it is far from the full experience that people pay actually for.

not that i'm promoting the use of marijuana , but i did want to throw that in, as such comments have crossed my consciousness a few times.

Roger, thanks for the post about lactobacillus...I make sure to eat a ton of yogurt when I'm on IV meds to replace the "good bateria" in my digestive tract that gets wiped out, but it never occurred to me that this might be helpful all the time to aid in digestion (DUH ). If there are ways to treat our problems without the use of medications (esp. those with icky side effects), I am all for it. Hope more people read your post and take it to heart...I'm going to buy my yogurt today!!
