Are you more susceptible when....

Well I would say with a lung function of 20 % you will not have very much fun in a water park anymore....
Lower lung function indicates that you are no longer able to do certain things or at least that you don´t have much fun with these things any longer, so its no big difference to be more careful too.
As long as you feel good and are able to do a lot of activities not doing them because being scared of bugs means missing something you will never be able to do again....
Seems a bit like that joke, when a man in his thirties comes to a doctor who tells him to stop smoking, drinking and too much sex, so that he can reach a high age. And the man says:" Why should I get so old when I won´t have any fun?"

If that's the case, Shamrock, then why do babies with CF get PA? And if they were exposed to cepacia, they'd pick that up too.

It's environment that CF creates that makes our lungs more vulnerable for virulent bacteria.

This is a good question.

I will say my opinion I don't think we are necessarily more susceptible to infection but that we "feel" it more. Meaning when you are at 80-90% lung function you don't necessarily notice a few percentage points falling off right away BUT when you are at 30% lung function even the slightest drop will effect you because you don't have much room to work with. I hope that makes sense. I know that is one thing I have had a hard time with post transplant - NOT obsessing over small percentage point changes in PFTs. To ME a 1% change is HUGE because I was at 30% for so long and every percentage point counts when you are in that range. The docs and RTs have to constantly remind me that the average person's PFTs can vary 5% on any given day.

As for the water parks. I still went to the water parks in Orlando when I was working with 30% lung function. The last time I went was about 2 months AFTER I have my partial lung collapse in 2005. The only reason I did notgo after that was because I was exhausted because of my breathing it was not an infection issue. Just the heat and all the walking and my blood sugar and everything it was very straining.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Sakasuka,

the question asked was 'would it make you more suseptible..', I would guess YES. The key word being 'MORE'. The other key word being 'GUESS' <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
