Arm port

Cory has been having a lot of discomfort with PICC lines lately. His arm aches through the entire course of IV's. He had a port for 7 years although a little over a year ago, it developed an infection in it and it had to come out. He has never had another one in because he really doesn't want it in his chest. Because he is so thin, it always stuck out and people would constantly bump it. Besides the fact that he is at an age where body image is important to him.
He has heard of Arm ports. Has anyone had any experience with them?

I've had my arm port for 7 years, 4 of which have been post tx...

I have not had any trouble with it since it was placed

I also had a chest port before my arm port, so I have experienced them both

if you want to know anything specific then please feel free to ask

cheers

momtoCory,
I dont have an arm port, but a chest port. I wanted to tell you about it because when I got my original one placed I was 15, I didnt like needles and body image was a huge issue. All I could see was a prom dress with a port sticking out the top. Not what I wanted. So my doctors placed it on my lower chest on the left, basically in my bra line. You cant see it when I wear a shirt, or one piece bathing suit. When it is accessed with a needle, I wear a baggy shirt and nothing is visible from the outside. I can protect it with my own arm. It took a little while to get use to for me not to hit it myself. Also, when it is not access, it doesnt stick out very far. You can hardly tell it is there. I got it replaced in 05 after having the first one for 7 yrs. I just wanted to put that option out there for you too.

I got a port put in the inside of my bicept on my left arm. It is actually called a Passport and uses a small huber needle that is 1 1/2", and 22 guage. I got it in October of 1996 and it is still working today just like new. It has been accessed many times for treatment as well as the occassional flush that I would do myself when hospital stays were months apart. I am rather thin and it is noticable if someone is really looking at you, I never had a problem with that. The only drawback for me was when I would hit it on something when working on a car or something....that would hurt briefly. I just learned be very carefull and things have worked out great. Good Luck.
