Aspergillus ~ fungus ball~ questions about both

I had my cf check up yesterday , and my Dr. told me my sputum sample does show aspergillus. The she told me the fungus ball might not automatically be the aspergillus, it could be something else, they just dont know without doing a biopsy. I have never had either of these problems before...aspergillus or a fungus ball and i am wondering if all my odd symptoms are from it. (I have had these symptoms for about 5 months now) I have these noises when i inhale or exhale and when i put ym hand over my left lung area i can feel the noises. When i cough up blood i can also feel that in my left lung( i still cough up some blood when i cough REAL hard and continuously). I also have this maddening itch that comes on suddenly in my throat on one side of it or the other that just makes me cough and cough till i get a cough drop and keep sipping water or whatever else is handy. That can be soooo embarrassing when i am out shopping or any where in public. Of coarse i now carry something to drink and cough drops with me everywhere i go. Any one else with aspergillus or a fungus ball have these same symptoms. Did the aspergillus go away? Did the fungus ball go away? Did the noises in the lung(s) go away? Did the tickle go away? I hope someone has some answers for me. I dont like being in the dark when i have all these odd symptoms. I am on Itraconazole ( Sporonox) for the fungus ball/aspergillus. I am assuming this is the route to go, and my doctor said i might be on it for 6 months or so which doesnt bother me one bit, since i take many medicines a day , one more is no big deal....As long as it works. Any info would be SO greatly appreciated......

I have some of those symptoms and have tested positive for aspergillus in the past. The problem is, those symptoms could be most anything cf related and I think doctors, even pulmo cf specialists just assume so.

All you could want to know about Aspergillus:

</a>
Aspergillus doesn't present a problem if you culture it, unless you are allergic to it. I found out that I culture it once and awhile, but that I'm not allergic. There is a simple blood test that can be done to determine this. If you are taking an anti-fungal medication like Sporonox, it should clear up the allergy you may suffer from.

Thank you for the responses so far. Also thank you Liz for the link. I read some of the info, theres a lot on that site . It says that most fungal infections are treated with Sporonox 400 mg.. I am on 200 mg , but i guess my Dr. knows what appropriate. I just want it to go away.

Hi Diane,

Sorry to hear you are not to good at the moment....... I suffer with Aspergillosis on and off since I was 18 yrs old.
I have this wheeze (and it does go away) and I get very tired and find it diffcult to breath. I get an allergic reaction and my white cells (IGE) go right up causing inflammination in my lungs and severe asthma exacerbations . My doctor treats me with Steroids which I am on since June.
For what I can remember and experience Aspergillosis does not go away completely it does come and go......
I stay out of parks and avoid the areas that has alot of debrie on the ground.

There is a new drug called Xolair that treats Aspergillosis and IGE's and I am checking with my doctor to see if he will allow me to take it!! If you do a search on Xolair and Aspergillios it tells you what the drug does.
I hope this helps you and things settle down for you!!!!!! Have a very nice weeked
