yep and no. mine always seems to come back every 3 months or so. i dont know whether it has anything to do with the seasons. when i get a flare up im put on 50 to 75mg of pred and 400 mg of itraconazole [sporanox]. im not sure if any advances are being made with the treatment for ABPA.

Hi my daughter colonized with aspergillous about two and a half years ago. When the doctors suspected that she was having allergic symptoms to it they put her on Sporonox. After a few months they put her on a low dose prednisone for about 6 months, maybe less. As time goes by, it all blurs together. Anyhow, they weined her off the prednisone, rechecked her levels and they were extremely low. She has been off the Sporonox and Prednisone for almost two years now. So far now problems/symptoms have returned. I have to say, both my husband and I were not too keen on the prednisone deal. But after some discussion and seeing all the trouble the aspergillous was causing we decided to go with it as long as it was not going to be longer than 6 months and that it was indeed low. She took it first every day for about a week or so, then every other day, then maintained it for every three days (or something like that) for a while, then it was lowered again to like twice a week until they stopped it. All the while taking the sporonox. So far so good. I was told that aspergillous is in many CF patients but that it only causes problems to those that have an allergic reaction to it. Hope this helpsLiza

Thank you for your responses. I too, am not keen on the prednisone. I always wonder if it just treats the symptoms, but doesn't really do anything to get rid of the aspergillus and therefore am hesitant to take it. I can understand your hesitation w/ a child too. I'm glad that both of you that responded have some sort of control over the aspergillus.

I had a terrible bout with Aspergillus when I was about 8 - I was treated with Amphotericin which does get rid of Aspergillus. I cultured it earlier this year, and my doc put me on steroids - we weren't sure if it was colonized yet as you can culture it but not have it affect you - anyway, the steroids allowed my airways to open up and I could get the gunk out of my lungs far easier than if I wasn't on the steroids - I ended up not culturing for Aspergillus again -so either I was able to cough it out or it wasn't colonized. Either way - the plan was that if I did culture it again after the steroids - I was going to be put on Amphotericin. Piperpmcp@comcast.net

Some mentioned you get recurring bouts of aspergillus. do you know why? Where it is coming from? do you also have CF?I had it 2 years ago and had part of a lung removed; now appears to be looming again.
