Ativan?

Can some one tell me how long Ativan stays in your system? And how long before the effects start to wear off? The reason I ask, is because I take Ativan on an if need basis, but I find I'm having more frequent panic attacks, so I'd like to use it as a regular thing. My script is for 1 pill 3x a day, but I know I don't need it that many times in a day. If say I took one pill first thing in the morning, how long before it would start to wear off and I would need another to keep my anxiety under control?

i took it once, to get a picc line in, and i didnt feel completely back to normal for a good 8 hours.
