Azithromycin

Just curious...how many of you are on Azithromycin daily? My husband with CF (28yrs.old) takes it every day and has done so for the last four years. He feels it has given him a whole new quality of life. He's only been hospitalized once for an exacerbation since starting it.

If any of you do take it daily, do you find you have bowel issues as well (aside from the normal CF bowel issues)? He had C.diff earlier in the year from all the antibiotics and stopped the Azithromycin for a while, but just started back a couple weeks ago at his doctor's request.

I have taken it every day for the last couple of years. I haven't noticed any bowel related issues linked to the Zithromax, however.

I take it every day (250mg) and have since November of 2002. Definitely has kept my health up in the long run. I have not experienced any digestive problems while on it. The only times I don't take it is when I go on a course of Cipro.

DS started it last fall. Takes it every day, once a day. I haven't weighed him recently, but I swear he's getting bigger -- heavier and taller and he hasn't had that nasty wheezy cough that he normally would get every winter.

Azithromycin (Zithromax) is used in CF because it has been found to increase lung function and reduce the number of exacerbations.

Recent studies have shown that azithromycin stimulates the lung epithelial cells to bypass the normal CFTR and use a different ion channel (MDR multi-drug resistance channel). So, basically, this other ion channel works like the non-functioning CFTR channel. It is not as effective as a normal CFTR channel, but it is effective enough to increase lung function.

This also can affect the pancrease and liver in positive ways.

i'm on Biaxin instead of Zithromax. Same class of drug and also same anti-inflammatory properties. Been using it for years.

So some questions for people who are on it:

Azithromycin is an actual atibiotic correct? And just an antibiotic? Or is it an antibiotic + some other formulation that allows for the new Ionic channel activity? Did they just create an antibiotic normally for regular prophalactic approach to CF, and then discovered it did this CFTR channel mimicing thing?

I'm extremely wary of taking "umbrella" antibiotics, especially on a regular basis after what happened to me with TOBI, but im interested in the new CFTR like channel activity.
